I've found the AppleTV exports of freeview to be unwatchable. It's as if the framerate is only at half of what it should be.

Since TV3 just added AC3 support I thought I'd give HandBrake a go (the SVN version), and it did a perfect encode at a lower bitrate than EyeTV/QT, including AC3 pass through/AAC hybrid audio.

The HandBrake devs are working on figuring out how to do AAC-LATM, when that is done then HandBrake can be hooked in as the encoder for EyeTV.

Also - the MetaX developer is looking into tagging of the resultant movies for a richer tagging experience, adding things like automatic artwork from tagchimp.

So it is early and exciting days for DVB to Apple viewing.

Hi Eddy, have been watching the progress of the DVB-T handbrake encoding with interest as an Freeview EyeTV to AppleTV media center is exactly what I am planning.

Fantastic to have someone from NZ so involved in the development

Couple of questions,
1. how long did the encode take with the SVN version? (say benchmarked against a 2.8Ghz iMac?)
2. Do you have a feeling for when a release version is likely to happen, i.e. weeks or months?

I only did a TV3 1080i AVC/AC-3 stream, because EyeTV is pathetic at those, and HandBrake can't do AAC-LATM at the moment. I found it to be faster than EyeTV but not by a huge amount. What was better though was the quality, heaps better than what EyeTV/QT was putting out - plus it was nice having the AC3 pass through.

Speed will be an issue - on a Mac Pro I was not getting 25fps for 1080i to 720p conversions (either with HB or QT), and so the 6 o'clock news wouldn't be ready until 8:30 - which is a tad late (assuming channel one was 1080i - which it isn't).

When I get some time I want to look at improving the speed - fewer frame copies would help.

2. Do you have a feeling for when a release version is likely to happen, i.e. weeks or months?

There are some issues with AAC-LATM, not really technical ones. We are trying to figure out where it ought to be implemented. LATM allows multiplexing audio streams into a single AAC stream. However DVB only ever puts one stream in there. So should the feature be implemented at the codec level, or the muxer level? It's sort of inbetween the two (a bit like TCP/IP and the ISO stack with networking). If it is implemented in the codec, then we need to add one to ffmpeg to do this. If it is implemented in the demuxer, which for HB is within the HB code.

I ffmpeg/HB developer is looking at it, so I've backed off for a while to see what happens.

And anyway, the newest EyeTV release is really bad - useless in fact, it is crashing and putting out crap output. So elgato need to fix that before HB can really do anything useful.

Hey, it's great that there's an EPG for EyeTV.

I've downloaded the script, run it, but I'm getting an error in the log file:

Downloads/listings-freeview.xml.gz: not in gzip format

The listings-freeview.xml.gz file is in the same directory the script file.

If I remove the .gz extension the .xml file contains:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, [no address given] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this.

Correct, there is no .xm file there.

As Mentalinc mentions, is it the site we're getting the xml file from that's causing the problem?

I think the site is having major problems updating the listings file. I haven't been able to get an update since June 19th. Does anyone know of another site that provides the required file?

I downloaded a copy of the listings xml file this morning, copied it to EyeTV and viola, a weeks worth of listings.

To update the guide manually, download the listings-freeview.xml file using the script. Then drag the file onto the EyeTV icon.

I've got my EyeTV icon in the dock so I just drag the TV listing file from the downloaded location using Finder and drop it onto the icon in the dock.

Hi All

I just got my iMac and wondering with EyeTv products. I check on the Eyetv website and see many products there some of them say NTSC and Pal so I am not quite sure which one to get !!!

I want to watch and record the show from Sky or normal Tv in my iMac as well as being able to play my Wii and Xbox.. So which EyeTv am I looking for?

The EyeTv250? or EyeTv 3???

I see one selling on Trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=162977622. Would this one work? and where do you guys get it from?

Thank you and sorry for asking too many questions, I just have no idea how this thing works !!!
