@Apsattv SYFY is the one I’m keen on, but US$35/m for a basic DirectTV Channel package their with the ability to stream SYFY via my VPN was a little rich for my blood 😕

What makes you think SyFy is locked up in NZ?
How can I get (all of) SyFy programming legitimately in NZ?

Its a special version customized for Australia, its likely the program rights are not cleared to simply pass through for NZ

Pleasseeeeee don't partner with an RSP! TiVo was such a great opportunity at the time, and look what happened to that.

Fetch seems to be doing ok partnering with multiple ISPs in Aus, I don't see any reason why it would be an issue here. Tivo ANZ failed because the business model at the core of the offering was fatally flawed. If Fetch can replicate their Aus model here then they should avoid that fate.

Not really... In the early days (1st and 2nd gen boxes), yes, but now they're trying to retail more.

People are getting burnt buying second-hand ex-RSP boxes that are tied to an account and wont work for the next owner (RSP boxes are RSP-locked not only to RSP, but an actual account).... and Fetch themselves are copping it badly.

Also, since NBN, churn is extremely popular and having RSP-locked devices is getting harder.

OK locking would be annoying. But buying the box on tick on your internet/phone bill would be appealing to a lot of people so my guess is there will be at least one launch partner.

The only thing, and I literally mean the only thing, keeping Sky in the game is rugby rights. Sky will continue to die the death of a thousand cuts while they retain these rights, and game over the moment they lose them.

Only reason I can see people keeping Sky for anything other than sport would be rural dwellers who can't get decent broadband. For them, Sky Movies etc is probably awesome.

I dont see that the Tivo issue was caused by Spark or caused by an RSP involvement. It was burned as Hybrid TV shut up shop. If Tivo was sold next to Panny's etc at Harvey Normal, Noel Lemmings :-) , the end game will have been the same. You could argue that RSP access gave it a kick start to a market, but not to ALL the market, and Tivo is a brand, so peoples will have got it whoever the supplier was

Sports rights, not rugby. Rugby might be the holy grail of sports here but it isn't. It might be the biggest sport, but its still a minority. NRL, motorsport, golf, tennis, and many others, lots to like sports wise.

While Fetch will have an impact on Sky, how many buy Sky to get FTA and Basic? Not many. Its about sport. The recent changes to the Basic lineup was only about reducing the cost of getting sport

I'm not sure that many pay Sky $49.91 just to get Basic, although personally I think its quite a nice overall selection. Basic is now cheap at $24.91, but its also weak as the cool channels aren't there (News, CNN, docos and others) There will be some, but dwarfed by those that want Sport but find it tough justifying the cost.

This is a cool box but wonder if they've missed their opportunity. Over on another thread when TiVo first announced its closure it was discovered Australia were offered cheap swap outs for Fetch boxes. A number of NZ Geekzone members/TiVo users (myself included) contacted Fetch directly pleading the business case to launch in NZ. To Fetch's credit based on that thread all got a polite personal reply of 'no immediate plans to launch in NZ'.

The NZ Herald also ran a beginners guide to TV on demand at http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=11424315 where they said "Fetch TV is not available yet, but the Australian company has said it is planning on moving into the New Zealand market this year" That article was written THREE years ago.

There are roughly 940 NZ-based TiVo users who have modded their units happily leveraging a community driven EPG who no longer look back. A market Fetch could have had a majority of if they got their act together.

That said if they launch here, so long as they don't lock themselves into some deal with an ISP they stand to reap the benefits of broad appeal. Especially with the alternative limited and sluggish set top boxes we have available.

I and other people here asked Fetch about their plans for NZ when it was announced that TiVo was shutting shop here. They said not at this time. I feel that they have missed the TiVo boat now but may catch some of the Sky cord cutters.
