They could start by dropping the useless +1 channels.
Leave these alone! They preserve an option to watch the news at 7pm if work commitments delay me beyond 6pm. I suspect I am not the only one.
Also good for those that can't timeshift for whatever reason

exactly, my [retired] parents use it all the time. They can't justify getting a PVR, so it's perfect for them if they want to watch the news later, or have a clash between two things they want to watch.
It has just occurred to me that the title of this thread needs to be corrected.
Mediaworks has not been acquired by Discovery. Rather, Mediaworks have sold their TV operation to Discovery.

I think you'll find when people talk about Mediaworks the only think about the TV side of things. I never think about their radio holdings.

Regardless, the topic isn't correctly titled.

That is interesting if true because radio and, to a lesser extent, out-of-home advertising are the profitable parts of the business. A lot of people believe that NZME's radio operation is doing okay but the reality is that Mediaworks own the age 54 and below demographic, and that's the audience that matters.
In some ways I actually think NZME is in more trouble than Mediaworks long term.
alasta:Funnily enough, while I know Mediaworks owns a good chunk of the radio market, I'd be hard pressed to tell you who/what they own. I know who owns what in the TV realm.

Radio and TV are intrinsically different media. TV demands some level of active involvement. Radio sits in the background and is passive. This is, of course, a sweeping generalisaiton.

Remember that the radio 'audience share' statistics almost invariably ignore people listening to Radio NZ National & Radio NZ Concert.
IIRC "Morning Report" on RNZ National has an actual market share that puts the commercial stations into minor placings, with a big gap between Morning Report and the least unpopular commercial station

I do love a good sweeping generalisation.

That's not entirely true any more. GFK have started releasing non-commercial listenership metrics a week or so after they release their regular stats for the commercial stations.
If I recall correctly the general pattern in recent history has had The Edge topping the cumulative audience figures with RNZ National and NZME's talk station also rating highly, albeit with the latter significantly skewed towards older people. In general the rest of the Mediaworks music stations perform pretty well while the NZME music stations struggle to compete.
RNZ has certainly seen a resurgence in the last five years but most of that audience probably came from the now defunct Radio Live. NZME's audience is less vulnerable to RNZ because they are more right wing and more 'sticky'.
"MediaWorks and Discovery complete sale"
Radio and out of home media company, MediaWorks, has today completed the sale of its free-to-air TV business to Discovery, originally announced in September 2020.
MediaWorks entertainment channels Three and Bravo, streaming service ThreeNow, and multi-platform news and current affairs service Newshub have now been officially separated from the company’s radio and out-of-home business.
The latter have been retained by MediaWorks Group, and have become part of Discovery Ltd.
MediaWorks TV Ltd will now operate as Discovery NZ Limited, and will look to combine Discovery’s businesses across New Zealand and Australia into one organisation spanning both countries, a move designed to increase scale across the region as a whole.

While I watch TV3 news if I get there by 6pm, if I miss the start, I've found that TVNZ on demand news can 'watch from the start'. If only TV3 on demand could do that too. Very easy to chromecast and watch the news from the start, rather than wait until 7pm, or just miss it completely.
