I mean what are they doing not implementing the EPG properly, If you really want people to move the Digital TV, the week ahead EPG is one of the big selling points,

I had originally been told by Panasonic that there would be no MHEG5, and that recording would only be VCR-style (or, I assume, allows one to use the EIT EPG, which isn’t particularly useful!).

So what really gives here? Does the manual state for a fact these units don't support MHEG 5?

No, these units do not support MHEG5. I was told this by the Panasonic Product Manager while visiting the Panasonic offices in Auckland. I also have a unit here in front of me and it shows the current program plus next (depending on station) and after that only "." as expected on a unit that doesn't support MHEG5.

Had a play with one,regardless of which mux it was on,
would not load TV2,TV3,C4 eit data,
only TV1 now and next prog.
Not much kop setting up recordings.....
Also,tried to manually record,kept getting
"cant find DVB ..."

This then confirms what Panasonic told me back in March -

"Regarding Freeview equipped DVD recorders, we are planning on introducing a model later this year however it won?t be Freeview badged as it won?t have the MHEG middleware for EPG. It will be able to pick up the Freeview channels though."

I kind of got excited when I read the HN catalogue. Now it appears HN is making cr@p up.

I assume this lack of MHEG support is why it won't be able to do series link?

Why did Harvey Norman make this claim in their advertising? It's possible that they just copied some of their Australian promotional material, or took the information from Panasonic's Australian website. On the Panasonic Australia website (links to that on the first post in this thread) it says:

"The DMR-BW850 also supports 7 day Electronic Program Guide where transmitted by each broadcaster, 7 day EPG makes recording a breeze" - That sounds familiar.

No criticism of Panasonic, their New Zealand website doesn't make any such claim, but Harvey Norman didn't seem to seem to take sufficient care in producing their promotional material.

It simply means that the program listing is there for the next 7 days. When you select a program from the list it then generates a date and time entry which you may then modify, similar to what happens when you put in a G-code, only simpler in that you don't need to type in a number, just select the program you want. However, there are no automatic updates for late program time changes or to link a series so it can be recorded no matter how much the broadcasters juggle their schedules around.

So, technically, the claim on the advertising is correct, though not as you might have interpreted it, that's all.

I don't quite understand. Are you saying that the 'now' and 'next' EIT listings are available for 7 days? If this is the case, I don't understand how this can be useful?

It simply has the listings for the next seven days. Suppose, for instance, you want to record Australian Idol starting next Friday. Find the listing on the EPG, click on it, and a date and time entry will show up. Then you can change the specifc date to "Every Friday" and tweak the times slightly for over or underrun.

It simply means you don't have to use G-code or manually enter the time from scratch. At least, that's the way I understand it. Maybe I got something wrong. What do you mean by "next"?

Where does it get the 7 day EPG data from? My understanding was that the terrestrial EPG is broadcast using MHEG5. The only EIT data being transmitted is "Now" (the current program playing) and "Next" (the program the follows).

Well, I've just come back from Harvey Normans where the demo is and, unfortunately, there isn't a listing for a full seven days. Whether that has to do with what's being sent from the stations or not or an incompatability, I'm not sure. You can click on several days in advance but the listings are blank. However, if you click on a slot, you still get a recording entry for the date and time which you can then adjust. The salseman thought there may be some tweaks by the time the actualy shipment arrived but he wasn't sure. I guess it's a case of trying to get an assurance form Panasonic of a firmware upgrade for this unit.

As discussed here before the unit does not support MHEG5 at this moment and anytning but the current plus next (or a few more) programs will have details loaded.

Panasonic is not giving any guarantee an upgrade with MHEG5 support is coming - I was assured of ths by the product manager himself at a demo at the Panasonic offices in Auckland. I have a unit here and can confirm this.

Don't fall for what the salesman is saying - there's is not "tweaks by the time the shipment arrives" to be done. He doesn't know what he's talking about.
