MHEG is built into Windows 7 Media Center, it just that Freeview have customised it so Windows can't really make heads or tails of it. That is according to Mike Hayton, a MS Media Center guy. He also reckons someone could develop a tool to strip it into xml and import it into MC. Anyway if that someone was around could they speak up.

Tivo's EPG data would have to be a hell of of a lot better than what is available now as they are advertising recording by favourite actors, directors, similar shows etc so the detail must be there, hopefully it is available to all.

Now someone using Telecom BB, with Tivo coming, and a proxy server at home need to do some investigation and see what info is being downloaded.

I just don't get this guarded EPG data NZ networks have. The networks either want us to know whats on TV or they don't. If they don't that's fine I won't watch it.

Yes there's extensions that have been added to the MHEG profile that Media Center doesnt support.

From the above comment, it sounds like the Tivo data will be more structured than that present in the EIT tables or in the MHEG DSM-CC. I should point out that the EPG data in the MHEG DSM-CC isnt any more detailed (structured) than the EIT data

My personal vote would be transmit the same data (instead of ".") in both places (i.e. the MHEG DSM-CC and the EIT tables) on DVB-T. I doubt there is much bandwidth lost by doing this. Has anyone asked them (is that Freeview?) why they wont do this? (Id be interested in knowing)

I've asked and the answer is providing full EIT would consume considerably more bandwidth compared with their existing configuration.

My estimate is it is enough for 2-3 Radio channels so not huge but still significant.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Based on comments from freeviewshop forum:

Yeah it tends to go up and down with respect to how many events they show, typically about 5-10 in advance. It seems that the bandwidth usage remains constant 0.66% of the total available bandwidth.

In order to have a full EIT EPG with full descriptions Feeview would have to increase this to one and a bit percent like on the satellite service which uses a 1.3% of the total available bandwidth.

They could just send the name only and forget about the description of all the programs and increase the bandwidth usage to perhaps 0.8% and then PlayTV and lots of other things i.e. PC cards and other PVRs would all work great, or they could go the whole way and use a little over 1%

I suspect Freeviews reluctance to provide a full EIT EPG has more to do with controlling the EPG than it does with any real technical reason.

It has more to do with controlling the GUI than the EPG data. The EPG data is easy to grab c/o EIT or their website.

If you look at the UK market and their terrestrial FreeView service every manufacturer has a differnet GUI for their EPG. Some are good, but most are crap. Alteast here you have a uniform look and feel.
