Media reports that Maori Television is bidding for 16 Rugby World Cup games are incorrect.
The Maori Television bid is for all 48 games of the tournament. The free-to-air rights that are available are for 16 of those games to be broadcast live and the remaining 32 to be broadcast on a delayed basis.

hahah They couldn't to a worse job then the other FTA channels so bring it on!!
......this is all good. Everybody involved in the production and broadcasting of these big events are pros - and mostly freelancing. It don't matter who's got it, we can all enjoy. Forget about who it was......this is the new era!
who give's ah, as long as some one is showing it free. Get a grip folks...for your same tax payer dollars you can have a David Bain trial, a Clayton Weatherspoon one...or, a Maori tv channel showing the rugger....hmmm revolutionary...
The point is it was going to be free no matter what and it as going to be on Freeview no matter what!!! - they are bidding on the FTA rights. The point is it was going to be broadcast by someone else at their cost ie TV3 etc (at realistic cost, not a over inflated ripp off the tax payer, straight into the pockets of exec's at Maori TV cost) That is the point.
Somone might be able to clarify this; Sky is the Host Broadcaster, but that has nothing to do with their transmission of the games. So what Maori TV are biding for is the Live Coverage of the 16 most important games. My understanding is that the RWC wouldn't be on sky at all. It would seem to me like a conflict of interest for sky, since they are being contracted to provide coverage of the games; for them to then buy back their own work from the IRB to then broadcast it?
What worries me is that if maori TV gets the contract, I doubt they will be willing to invest the money to upgrade their presentation facilities to HD. SKY is definatly providing coverage in HD, and 5.1, but if maori TV gets it, then I think we'll be stuck with SD, stereo. This wouldn't be the case if TV3 got the deal!
The other thing is that TV3 and TVNZ have a much larger client base, and sales team, so their potential to make the broadcast of the RWC pay for itself is much much larger!

Yeah but buy the sounds of it they (and TVNZ) have already done their sums and the bid they put up was rejected.

Sound like the IRB are just being greedy, after all TVNZ & TV3 should have a good idea how much its going to cost the broadcast the matches but the IRB just want the highest bidder (which is kind of obvious really) unfortunately the highest bidder is bidding with a taxpayer funded handout.
I don't care who gets it, so long as I can watch it. Free would be nice, but I have no problem getting Sky Sport for a month (esp if they are going to broadcast in HD and the winning bidder in SD).
I'm pretty sure thats not the way business works. The IRB can't just tell sky to work for them for whatever price they want, and they are pretty much stuck with sky, as they are the only company with a network of contract staff around all the major rugby venues in NZ.
TV3 should get it so that they can show it in either 720p or 1080i. What a waste of having it shown on Maori TV or Prime at only 576p. Prime has the worst quality out of all the standard definition channels on freeview, alot of pixelisation and artifacts. Maori TV would be better than Prime but still it should go to TV3 or TV1 so it can be shown in HD.
