I am wonder where is the 5.1 content? Shouldn't most movies be able to be broadcast in 5.1?

One thought is that if stereo (pro logic?) content is mixed into DD5.1, I am wondering how would we know which is true 5.1 and which is not just mixed 2.0? Is there a way to add flags to 2.0 content to allow DD decoders to create centre and rear channels? Just wondering...

They would have to drop the stream back to a DD 2.0 stream to be able to get prologic decoding done at the consumers end.

That is preferable to doing a prologic decode at their end since I cant stand prologic with its jumpy center speaker positioning and random noisy rears.

That would be pretty good. I wonder why they don't/cannot switch between 2.0 and 5.1 then depending on the content?

RustyGonad: All technology arguments aside this really boils down to whether or not the Freeview associated networks (TVNZ & TV3) are committed to HD in New Zealand.

I have a strong opinion that they currently are not - I believe that Freeview HD was nothing more than a weakly vieled marketing attempt to one up Sky Televisions release of their own HD network.

If either network was committed to HD - they would showcase their premier content ie the 6pm news slot in HD.

I am sorry but both TVNZ and Mediaworks are not getting paid to run HD shows like Sky are. If studios and production houses are charging extra for these shows then there would have to be a financial benefit for them to run it and in this current economy and more likely for a couple of years to come I doubt either network will be able to recoup any extra costs for HD shows.

As for the News, I wouldn't be surprised if the presenters had non HD clauses in there contracts until after they get the surgery sorted or large pay increases for showing more detail on there faces. Anyway, not a big issue it would be irritating to go from HD studio to someone standing by live on the internet or a non HD clip. Worse then the ever changing ad's 4:3 -> 16:9 -> 480 -> 576 -> 720 on TV.

As with any new technology being rolled out in such a large industry it will take time....and the way TV tech has moved in the past I would say it is going to take a lot of time at that. But at least if you have your home setup and running you will not have to change anything for years to come.
