What I meant is there's a big difference between four year old safe material and the more violent kind of stuff aimed at 8 - 10 year olds that the marketers are more interested in. Alot of children's programming today is perverse.

Here's what's happening with Kidzone:

Previously

At the very start of TVNZ 6's launch the public service channel had originally structured its daily schedule as a 3 separate services titling: TVNZ Kidzone (which had run from 6am to 4:00), TVNZ Family (4:00 to 8:30) and TVNZ Showcase (8:30 to midnight - while TVNZ 6 had closed down at midnight to 6am).
[edit] Closure

TVNZ 6 will be cease broadcasting on February 28, 2011 and be replaced on March 13, 2011 by TVNZ U, a "social" channel targeted at 15?24 year olds.[2][3] Kidzone, Shortland Street: From the Beginning and other TVNZ 6 content will move to sister channels TVNZ 7 and TVNZ Heartland. TVNZ U will be advertiser-supported and will run from midday to midnight.

There is also a petition regarding Kidzone at: http://www.petitiononline.co.nz/petition/tvnz-please-keep-kidzone/23

Although its maybe a little redundant as they are keeping some of Kidzone and moving it to 7.

Kidzone on 7 only runs from 6am to 8am. News on TVNZ7 in that timeslot undermines Breakfast's ratings, which are important to TVNZ.

Sorry but a social TV channel is dumb as it could be... The interactivity of the web and mobile technologies is lost on this one way channel.

And before anyone says "SMS to TV", no, I don't believe making their viewers "interact" via SMS with the TV channel will make it "social".

Likewise this morning the 10 min cycling news show I used to watch on TVNZ7 has gone. Cartoons whilst I eat my breakfast just didn't cut it.

I don't get a paper and don't have the internet at home. That show suited my needs perfectly compared to the long format news on other channels or that painful breakfast show.

And that's it for "curated" news. Others decide what you watch while you eat your breakfast. At least is not others deciding what you eat while watching Breakfast...

After seeing the Dross on breakfast and the cartoons on 7 I turned over to Stratos who were running Aljazeera News. Pity it was still in "fatovision" thought that they were supposed to be 16x9 today..

I have a feeling that TVNZ are gonna get a pasting over this decision, first heartland and now this, I thought that freeview was the place for this "public service" TV, not encrypted on Sky.

TVNZ To Launch 24 Hour Kidzone Channel On Sky

Press Release by Television New  Zealand at 8:54 am, 01 Mar 2011

TVNZ and SKY have partnered to launch a 24 hour pre-school children's channel on the SKY platform from 1 May called TVNZ Kidzone24.

TVNZ Kidzone24 will feature trusted educational and inspiring content for pre-school children in an advertising-free environment.

Chief Executive Rick Ellis is delighted that SKY has made it possible for TVNZ to extend the popular Kidzone programming block beyond the two hours that are available on public service channel TVNZ 7.

"Kidzone has been an increasingly popular block of programming, providing educational and entertaining content for young New Zealanders, with a significant amount of locally produced programming.

"It is fantastic that we are now able to offer a commercially-viable, expanded Kidzone channel, on the SKY platform.

John Fellet, CEO of SKY Television, is equally thrilled to have Kidzone added to SKY's existing offerings for family viewing.

"We are delighted to be working with TVNZ to assist them build what has been a very popular segment into a dedicated channel of its own.  The addition of TVNZ Kidzone24 to our range of family viewing options underlines our commitment to providing the widest selection of quality programming for all age groups," he said.

The Kidzone24 programme schedule will be released in April and features existing favourites including Kidzone with Kayne, as well as new content with a learning focus.

The channel will be located on SKY Channel 046, within the stable of family channels and will be available as part of the SKY Basic Digital Package.
Select content will also be available on iSKY.

Link for above release.

I agree it is not in the interests of the taxpayer, who funds TVNZ, for any semi decent NZ television content to be forced to pay for Sky TV.

It almost, in my mind, seems that TVNZ has joined forces with Sky to reduce the uptake of freeview and push people into pay TV.

So they stop programs for the much needed kids education on FTA, to replace with a half day "social" "youth" channel, while relaunching the kids channel on a pay TV?

Our tax dollars at work...
