hdinsider: Tv3 was definitely 5.1

interesting, were you watching it through a freeview decoder or Mysky as my Amp was telling me it wasn't 5.1 sound

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Freeview tv3 on a mysky and Panasonic both 5.1 for sure. Ch9 on Optus d1 is SD.

TV3 transmits fulltime AC3 5.1, and stereo content is encoded within the 5.1 wrapper transmitted on the LF and RF channels, so every amp will show TV3 as being 5.1 DD even if the content isn't native 5.1

If you're not seeing this on your amp you've either got things hooked up incorrently or have selected the TV3 AAC audio feed rather than the AC3 one.

It's possible if you're watching mysky that you have selected the pcm audio rather than the Dolby. Tv3 on mysky has both audios available. Tv1 and 2 only have Dolby on mysky.

Chrisbaby, what was the resolution on ch9? It should display it if you use the info button. I think you'll find it's 720x576i and stereo not surround.

just saying that my amp shows a blue light when 5.1 is broadcast and both tv1 and sky were showing the blue light, soon as i switched to TV 3 the light disappeared , usually its there on the TV3 broadcasts and not TVNZ.

Any chance you or your equipment had selected the stereo audio stream on TV3?
