CTV was mentioning this year that they were working to get on Freeview - I would say the two new channels would be whatever is replacing TVNZ7 and the addition of CTV.

Maybe TVNZ7 will survive, according to http://tvnz.co.nz/technology-news/dunne-s-deal-save-tvnz-7-4596891

"United Future leader Peter Dunne says he intends to save TVNZ 7 after securing funding guarantees as part of a coalition agreement with the National party.

Dunne signed a confidence and supply agreement with National yesterday, and part of his deal was to maintain the current levels of funding for TVNZ and Radio New Zealand for their public broadcasting duties."

My understanding is that such funding is "tagged" for a specific purpose; hopefully TVNZ7.

Did you see John Key's Interview on breakfast last week? He was still not going to give TVNZ any money. Apparently it is "Going into the NZ on Air Platinum Fund". His attitude is horrible. He keeps comparing us to the OECD in his policies. What about the fact that we will be the only country in the OECD that will have no Public Service TV? Ouch!

Rant Over.

I said DECENTprogramming...

How is Kidzone and Heartland decent programming? Rehashed old rubbish being repeated ad nauseum...

Sky, on the other hand...they at least have some good programming along with the dross.

Not FTA. You will have to pay for all of it especially with the GOV talking about subsidizing the new Igloo box.

Doubt it.

They need the viewers.

They realise now, that if they dont put some good programming out. They simply wont have the numbers.

Me & the gf watch 3 & Four on a regular basis. TV2 sometimes.
None of the other channels has anything we really want to watch.

Cop shows, Comedies, Movies, Family Guy. All mostly on 2, 3 & 4.

The best rating shows will always be on free to air, because that's where they can get the most revenue (higher priced ads). Lower rating shows are better for pay TV where the broadcaster has a guaranteed monthly income - doesn't matter if people watch or not.

My tv viewing has cut down drastically over the last few years, i will be lucky to watch an hour a week of traditional tv, and of that hour i will find myself watching The deadliest catch or Swords with my flatmate (via discovery on our sky subscription that i help pay for but never watch). Thats not to say im not watching tv shows, on the contrary, i still roughly watch 2 hours a night but just by other means. Ads are annoying but thats not the main reason, its content, and its been discussed to death already but there's nothing really of interest on NZ tv or if there is its months later and at some random time that chances are ill forget its on. Soho on the other hand is a good idea, good shows on reasonably fast from the states but of course they wound you for the privilege

They do not see things the way you do. To them TVNZ7 is an obscure channel on 77 on their Sky remote with socialist programming.

We only have 4 million people. We cant afford anything. Have to let areas pay for themselves sometimes.

Sky's revenues will exceed 800 million dollars next year so the willingness to pay up large for TV content is there. But as a society New Zealand's population and politicians haven't organised to send that money the way of public broadcasting.

NZ On Air spends around $20 per person per year on public television grants which is much less than the old licence fee, compared against nearly $190 per person per year sent Sky's way. The licence fee in the UK is about NZ$300 per household.

Labour is more responsible for this situation than National is. The reason TVNZ got funding for 6 and 7 was because of a bookish broadcasting minister and that they thought TVNZ6 and 7 could be self-supporting by advertising by now. Otherwise they wouldn't have existed.

I have very little confidence that with Channel 7 being axed its void will be replaced by anything of quality, quality is linked to actually spent money.

But here is a more serious concern... the government is focused on developing New Zealand as a research and/or a more IT/intelligence/knowledge based economy. Developing all this is based every early on, and this is what Channels best purpose is... science and documentaries that focus and develop peoples thinking.

In a metaphorical sense, the interest and modes of thought developed by this exposure make science/knowledge 'sexy' to growing children, it is likely to shape their direction of study because of how they see the world. This is how you start to grow a knowledge based economy, axing these sorts of channels does nothing but dumb down the countries future standards.

Of course there are other roads that lead to such outcomes, but the power of the medium that which called TV is powerful. I certainly remeber the profound effects of seeing TV shows that taught me about the world, how to formulate and experiment regarding the world around me. Sadly most of main stream TV these days just represents predigested sugar laden food with no nutritional value.

My question is this... do we want a future populous that has decision made for them or a populous that makes decisions and influences others?
