I'd hate to see the content move online only.  I can't stand online only content right now as there is no single aggregated application than can track when new episodes are released etc.  I'm happy for their to be multiple content providers but really, they should produce a single app that can access them and notify you via email or in the app itself that content you like is ready to watch.

Possibly.  But how many freeviewplus devices are there that aren't a TV.  A couple of bluray players, and the dish tv?

And that's where I'd say @Benoire's frustration comes from.

I just wish ALL the providers, including current online only e.g. Netflix etc. developed an open standard which included notifications so people could develop apps that could accept the streams and inputs from the various companies in one place and you could view all content that you have subscribed to in a single app rather than the multiple; that is the advantage of traditional TV - everything was available in one place without the worry that something would break (normally).  Using apps now mean potentially being left out if they sign up to something (e.g. TVNZ & Samsung), or that the streams will not work on your device due to compatibility.

Anyway, I digress from the topic... Apologies!

But with traditional TV, you only had a choice of a handful of things at at time and they varied during the day and you had to watch it on their schedule.

I think that there should be open API's for the content providers so that others can start aggrigation services much like kodi does for pirated stuff, thatway you can get it all thru one UI of whatever device or service you buy and they can run their own recommendation engines etc based on what you do across everything.

Amazon have a sort-of that in the fire tv where it will search other things, but that is the limit of it.

I'm not overly a fan of FOUR, can't say I've watched it much at all - so it's no real skin off my nose, but didn't it have Simpsons and futurama and familly guy type stuff?  There's been no word as to where that is moving to....and I'd imagine those shows have a fair number of fans - more, most likely than the real housewives franchises (all 8-9ish put together).

It had Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, plus other comedies like New Girl and The Goldbergs, and some of those were express from the US.

I see the Mediaworks CEO has resigned today. I wonder what that'll mean in terms of plans and whether they'll change?

I wouldn't count on anything changing. They have set their course and the inertia will carry them to their doom.

As far as the lack of standards goes, this seems a lot like the other transitional periods with videotape recorders, DVD, and the like. I think eventually things will shake out and a standard will evolve for all those different apps and sources. It just hasn't happened yet.

MikeB4: Another channel I won't be watching, Freeview continues it's slide into sewer TV. Freeview is not even worth wasting a few dollars to buy a decoder or the cable to connect it to an aerial.

Freeview came with my TV.

There used to be some good channels on it, but once the government realised people were watching them, they pulled their frequency (Triangle TV) or similarly degraded the content (Choice TV). The latter used to have lots of good docos....and suddenly they stopped.

We need a government that isn't in the pocket of Sky and Mediaworks.

This one isn't it.

China understand the value of public broadcasting. There are three Chinese TV channels on Freeview.....with at least two of them paid for by the Chinese govt. One of them is all news, all the time.

Sad to think the Chinese government is the biggest public service TV broadcaster in NZ.
