Thanks.

Hi guys, glad I found this topic!

After our 'retune' in the Manawatu a few days ago our reception has gone from excellent to absolutely poor, TV3 is un-watchable and TVONE is really patchy.

I installed the aerial myself and it is facing Wharite which I can see from where it it mounted on the roof, there is 2 Samsung TVs both with built-in FV and both are getting the same reception, or lack thereof.

Any ideas on what I can do?
So far have just reset/retuned the TVs serveral times but it hasn't helped, 3 isn't even working as I'm typing this (on a clear/calm night).

Regards
Josh

(edit) I am located close to the College Street/Botanical Road intersection in PN, if that helps.

Some suggestions are: Remove any external devices from the aerial feed (eg vhs or dvd recorders with rf modulators) & splitters you might have.
Can you get at least one of your tv´s to tune in?

There have been some cases where the installations have been marginal before and the lowering of the channels have caused the signal received at the wall to below the margin required for reception.

Finally how far from Wharite are you and what is the coverage like at your place according to the freeviewnz coverage map?

Reception is all good here.
I guess the first thing would be to make sure you're tuning with the right frequencies:

562 MHz (Mediaworks)
578 MHz (TVNZ)
594 MHz (Kordia)

...and with the correct bandwidth, which is 8 MHz.

What kind of aerial is it - UHF only, or a combo?
How are you splitting the signal to the two TVs?
What happens if you remove the splitter (if you can)?

We are 17.4kms away according to Google maps and "very likely" to get reception.

Both TVs tune in fine, I can't remove the splitter which is just a 1 into 2 with an extension lead of a couple of meters from the bedroom through the wall to the lounge TV.

I have just retuned the bedroom TV - which is straight off the roof aerial cable and it is the same as the reception in the lounge, piss poor.  For some reason this afternoon/tonight it has got especially bad.

We have http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/tvs/cables-aerials/auction-456428007.htm this aerial.

As far as I can tell, in either of our TVs which have builtin FV I cannot change the frequencies or bandwidth?

Can you manual tune the TV´s? Channel numbers should be 32, 34 & 36 (or those Freqs previously mentioned.

Another idea is a factory reset of the TV (try one first) to see if that helps too

Just tried that - no difference and the freqs listed above are correct.

Factory reset I did on both TVs yesterday (was one of the first things I tried after re-tuning) - made no difference either :(

Starting to sound like an installation issue at this stage. How old is the aerial & splitter by the way?

Less than a month, we recently moved here (literally 1 block south of where we were previously) and left the old cabling/aerial etc I installed at the other house.

If you can´t bypass the splitter, I´d be recommended you getting a meter on the end of one or other of your wall outlets to see what levels your getting at that point.

Where would I acquire said meter?

Jaycar have a very basic meter here but I´d pick an installer who has something a bit more sophisticated in their arsenal. Something that can offer you a visual display of the spectrum would be the way to go.

That's pretty much out of the question, installers in our area are stupidly expensive, 2 companys wanted over $500 for aerial and single cable into the house, this is why I've done a few myself the last couple of years.

I may try my luck with a booster but other than that I may just give up on FV.

Thanks for the advice folks.

You could try moving the aerial about and seeing if the signal strength improves. Is it installed to the correct polarity? I think for Wharite it is vertical. Wharite is 25.5km away from you.

Is your aerial a small one, like 20 elements?
