DamageInc:

My mum rang me in a panic to say her freeview was not working. Did some digging and found the freeview update notice happening today.

My mum has the freeview box S7070r. Currently has no strength or quality showing, both 0%.

I've tried re-tuning, tried the cold re-tune, both nothing.

Do we have to buy a new freeview box?

Any help much appreciated.

Yes, she will need a new box. I too had to organise a replacement of that same model for an older couple in my family. I chose the DishTV SAT1. It is easy to set up, easy to use, and they are happy with it.

DVB-S only box so I'm afraid you'll have to upgrade

Good as gold, thanks so much for your help. Off to The Warehouse it is.

Thanks so much for your help. I see The Warehouse have these so that's the after-work project today.

This was very helpful for me

thank you for posting

DaMuzzMan67:

Well, using our newish DishTV Sat1 box, it has automatically switched over to the new satellite using the transponders:

12456/H/22500  14 Services
12483/H/22500  8 Services
12530/H/30000  4 Services
12394/H/22500  0 Services

All the channels are there without having to do any manual work. Looks like the signal strength has increased from about 80% to high 90s.

My sister, who is blind, is in a real mess at her place. They use DVB-S and have a big mess of hardware. Some have updated, and some have not. Trying to get her to understand the difference between DVB-T and DVB-S, let alone why some are working and some are not, is proving difficult. I think a visit will be needed. In addition, whatever I replace with needs to have a dedicated Freeview button. I found the SmartVu and feel like I may as well just move her to streaming.

They're still SD. The base frequency is still 12483 (the receiver should automatically find the others).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Are they still MPEG-2 and not H264?

Edit: After reading the Sky thread it seems they are using both, depending on the channel.

When I look at the Freeview spec and see that HEVC will be at 1080p50 it puts me in two minds. On one hand, interlaced needs to die, so full progressive is a great improvement. But the cynic in me wonders whether the broadcasters will use interpolation on 25p content and recreate the "soap opera effect"... only one that you won't be able to disable in your TV settings.

I wouldnt worry about it hevc aint happening now or in the future. The market for linear tv is dead.  A bit of a lame duck like the whole Freeview platform has always been. There hardly a demand from any 3rd party channels to get onto it. The broadcasters don't want to put money into it.

Gone by 2030 i reckon, replaced by propper iptv delivery over fibre

I suspect you're right with the timing. Terrestrial licenses come up for renewal in 2031 I think.

I'd be keeping an eye on Freely from the UK to see how well it gets adopted

I’d be happy to remove my UHF antenna for Freeview and use the streaming option if the picture and sound quality were on par

They really should be better, as they don't have the limitations of spectrum or need to confirm to legacy lowest common supported formats. like over the air with being stuck at silly frame rates, fixed aspect ratios and ancient codecs. The problem is they are creating content for that legacy infrastructure and then dumping it online where it cant be any better.

Hi there I have had to replace my sat box on my second tv as I lost some channels.
The no 1 tv has inbuilt freeveiw and works well, it works with LNB 12750 on KU band and through optus d1, and gets all the channels.
So the new box i got for my second TV, I have managed to tune in, all the channels but with great difficulty and a lot of time. LNB is 5150 on C band and through multiple random satellites, but not including optus or koreasat.
Do you think I am doing something wrong and what can I do to make everything work through our new satellite.

I should add that both setups are connected to the same small dish.
