Detruire: I'd like to know why, to get all available channels, we are expected to purchase equipment both satellite and HD equipment.

Good question - save it for the next Q&A round next month...

That's the decision of the broadcaster, not FV.

I don't understand why they're given the option. It's not in the best interest of freeview if people don't switch because they don't want to pay for both, and won't switch while either options leaves them shortchanged.

The EIT EPG answer seems a bit hard to believe.   I would doubt that the EPG information would be that wasteful of bandwidth (No graphics or anything like MHEG) and as far as I know they include the EIT information on DVB-S which is supposedly far more bandwidth constrained than DVB-T.

I'm sure next they will be saying  that bandwidth is also why TVNZ are using the horrid 64k audio on DVB-T....

Are Freeview still answering questions on this thread?

If so, I have one for them - would it be possible for them to add a service messages /outage notifications page on the Freeview site, so that if there is something going on like a software upgrade or something similar people dont have to ask here or elsewhere

Regards
Peter

I was thinking in the weekend, has metservice expressed interest in putting a weather channel on freeview? (say in the format Saturn Weather uses or interactive like on sky)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!
Finally someone else who has noticed the absolutely scratchy audio quality on TVNZ DVB-T broadcasts (I'm sure others have noticed too). I can't believe they can get away with such stunning HD picture quality, and then slam this pokey audio quality on top of it. Hurry up TVNZ....... where is Dolby Digital already!

I remember some press release from TVNZ a while back saying that they were installing new equipment to handle Dolby Digital. Maybe the recession has slowed them down????

Doesn't look good for HD in NZ
http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/gadgets/2717483/Slow-start-for-high-def-TV

The problem with TVNZ, Mediaworks etc is that the people in high positions don't have a clue what they are doing, they got the job because they "know someone" not because they have the technical experience to make informed decisions.

"Spokeswoman Megan Richards points out the "upconversion" of standard definition programmes on TVNZ's Freeview HD and MySky HDi transmission streams has narrowed the high-def resolution gap."

Come on upscaling SD is as good as proper hi-def material, I don't think so.

Are you using an official STB or a PC to watch freeview|HD ?

Hi there,

Is there any truth to the reports of Prime on freeview soon?

Could Freeview please be bold and extend the EIT data broadcast on the UHF service to that of the Sat service?
PLEASE?!!, Even just a little bit more, like a day or 2.

This really wouldn't take up too much more bandwidth based on comments found here:
http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/forum/index.php/topic,422.90.html

"In order to have a full EIT EPG with full descriptions Feeview would have to increase this to one and a bit percent like on the satellite service which uses a 1.3% of the total available bandwidth."

EIT is a horrible effectively obsolete EPG format.

MHEG5 is now being chosen by most new digital rollouts around the world as the only EPG format and it also enables them to deliver features such the red button.

Freeview made a good move IMMO not supporting EIT so establish a base standard for all hardware.

The Australians have already caused plenty of dramas for themselves in future by adopting MHEG5 as their official EPG for Freeview but not requiring this for Freeview certification. You'd think after their MPEG2 dramas over there they could actually think of the future for once.

Yea that horrible EIT standard that doesn't let you do anything - unless of course you have a Media Center, then its kind of a nice easy INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED STANDARD way to get you guide. And then you can do all that other fancy stuff like series record bla bla bla....But then again thinking about it Sky seems to do quite well with EIT as well in MySky HDi... hmmmm can't be right...

Good to see Freeview standardised on the MHEG standard, except for on Satellite where they use EIT - ahhh why is that again???? Isn't MHEG their preferred standard - nah I must be mistaken.

Also nice to see they took that nice internationally accepted open standard and customised it so that no other gear works on it... But hey there's a couple of Freeview certified boxes. Waiting for PlayTV anyone...

But all the official boxes out there support RED BUTTON services though which means they can do what? Ahhhhh maybe Freeview can get back to us on that one too.

Yea Freeview made the right moves, much better to have internationally accepted standard MHEG which is used in about 5 countries, rather than using those old dog standards like EIT and say Dolby Digital (TVNZ), or some HiDef content maybe... nah much rather have regional ads, MHEG, and a "near DVD" quality picture... And that beautiful AAC sound... At least the guide looks the same...
