It would be great to have Juice TV on the platform, its current status now is that Juice TV is now a Pay-TV channel only on SKY TV 62, They cancelled their analogue broadcasts in October, perhaps for the switch to Digital,

I dont know why it was made only on Sky as they would of coped broadcasting on Freeview HD in Auckland

On Sky they get paid to provide content. On Freeview they have to pay to get content to air so unlikely if they can't afford to retain their old analog license..

I wonder if it is a worth while idea getting an electronic petition together to draw to govt peoples displeasure at channel 7 being taken apart.

Not true. At the risk of sounding like a brown lipstick mouthpiece for Rick Ellis, he has had this to say:

TVNZ 6 and TVNZ 7 are simply not viable in any way in an advertising supported commercial market. We have been able to create a commercially viable future from the assets of TVNZ 6, through channel U and the shortly to be launched TVNZ Kidzone24. We have not been able to develop a commercially viable solution from TVNZ 7, probably because there isn’t one.

And in May of 2011:

TVNZ 6 and 7 are commercial free “public broadcasting” digital channels, funded entirely by government and not from the commercial endeavours of TVNZ. The funding of $78 million for these channels runs out at the end of the year, and the government directed the company to come up with replacement solutions for these channels in the event there may not be any new funding forthcoming upon the expiry of current funding.
After considering a wide number of options we settled on the best option to use the TVNZ 6 frequency as Channel U , and the only commercially viable way to support an enduring presence for Kidzone was a pay channel which we pitched to SKY as TVNZ Kidzone24, which we are very pleased they have accepted. By launching these channels during the first half of this year, we are able to extend the broadcast of TVNZ 7 through to the end of June 2012 Let me be clear, in the absence of direct government funding, TVNZ6 and TVNZ 7 are not sustainable even if they did carry some advertising.
We have not been able to come up with a viable commercial option for TVNZ 7, and so we have been working with government to try and get extended funding. Government will shortly decide and advise us, but with the enormous financial burden our government now carries, I am not hopeful, and hence the statement I made to staff earlier today.

Advertising revenue is just not the same as profit though, is it? TVNZ's profit last year was $2.1 million. Reference: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10747728. Feeble, eh? As the article says, TVNZ wrote off $17.7 million due to TiVo and paid out a $13.8 million dividend to the govt.

bfginger: The main negative changes at TVNZ have not been so much because of the lack of government funding but because they're funding the government with onerous dividend payments. Removing or greatly reducing the requirement of TVNZ to return a profit to the government would be enough to make it a much better operation. Fixing TVNZ is the easiest and most effective way of fixing the terminal decline of NZ television.

Freeview has confirmed to me that the new channel will be announced in the next few weeks

1. I'm not sure they could easily fund it. The costs of TVNZ7, once the government subsidy runs out, greatly exceed TVNZ's gross profit.
2. Investing money in a venture that is expected to be profitable (assuming they *are* investing, not just being paid to provide content), rather than pouring it into a venture that is a known money loser and is never expected to be able to remotely even break even, isn't exactly the dumbest decision I have ever heard of.

There is no reason a company whose revenue from advertising last year was well over $300 million, and once you included the tax payer funding over $400 million can not pay to run tv7.

1. revenue != surplus. Most of it is consumed by running costs for the existing business.
2. What is this $100 million of taxpayer funding of which you speak? If it's the budget fr NZ on Air then using it for TVNZ7 would require some other tradeoffs that might not exactly be popular either - like closing Radio NZ, and terminating most of the local content on TV1, TV2, and TV3 etc.
3. If the taxpayer really has a spare $100 million a year, personally I would like it spent on things like rebuilding christchurch, and a few more doctors in hospitals, rather than a couple of new TV series.

No I asked Freeview what will replace Stratos, TV 9 is not replacing Stratos, The other channel is TV 9 I suspect

Not sure of the maths there, however the government subsidy will not run out anytime soon. A reference for that fact on TVNZ7 is found on TVNZ's own website at http://tvnz.co.nz/technology-news/dunne-s-deal-save-tvnz-7-4596891.

Quoting directly from that page: “United Future leader Peter Dunne says he intends to save TVNZ 7 after securing funding guarantees as part of a coalition agreement with the National party.

Dunne signed a confidence and supply agreement with National yesterday, and part of his deal was to maintain the current levels of funding for TVNZ and Radio New Zealand for their public broadcasting duties.”

So if TVNZ can afford TVNZ7 now, they will be able to in August. Lack of funding is no longer a reason for closing TVNZ7.

I suspect that was a reference to the TVNZ/Sky partnership on Igloo - which they both expect bleed money on initially.

I should point out also that the broadcaster doesn't get the NZOA money. That funding goes to the makers of the programme to fund it's production. Besides which, even if every NZ made programme on TVNZ7 was completely funded by NZOA, it still wouldn't be enough to keep the channel running.

That's what Dunne said, but there has yet to be any kind of announcement from the govt on this. That article was dated 6 December. To crib from the TVNZ intranet again:

Q. Dear Rick, Peter Dunne says he plans to speak to TVNZ directly about saving TVNZ 7. Is there any chance he will be successful?

A. We are always open to discussion of course but the fact is that we've been advised by Government that there will be no change to the current situation regarding funding - which is that it will run out at the end of June next year. That being the case, we have no option but to close the channel.

Probably not - it's an announcement...

As for TV9 (Channel 29) - it's already commenced broadcasting. Not exactly sure when it started but it's been about a couple of weeks now.
