ok i saw a sign in Noel Leemings saying, "why spend two hours setting up your Tivo when we will do it for you for only $149.00", now does it really take 2 hours to set it up and if it doesnt is it false advertising . i hate shops that try to take advantage of customers that have no clue

Common sense is not as common as you think.

That's rough but possibly a service they offer to elderly etc and no doubt includes physical installation as well.  Still, that's $74.50 an hour, so someones doing ok out of it!

been there done that there is no support in NZ. There is a guy in Australia but as I said I don't want to go that way. The support number can not handle things like replacing hard drives and reinstalling the Tivo software etc they seem to be basically just an advice and help centre. What we need for Tivo to be successful is someone like the old TISCO that can take in the devices and repair them.

I thought in this instance they would just replace the unit?

Nah that's not right, consumer guarantees act should cover you and, despite what the retailers appear to be saying, you purchased it from them, not Telecom.

I am sure you are correct and you could proceed with a claim and would probably win but its a long winded road and I just wanted to get my tivo's fixed. At $200 it is easier just to buy a new one and probably cheaper when you consider filing costs and the long wait for justice.

Then again there's the principle of the matter - don't let yourself be screwed out of your rights for remedy under the CGA. I'm sure many companies count on this.

I recently dealt with NL for an item out of guarantee period (a GPS unit about 17 months old in which the battery would not hold charge) - while I had to push a little bit harder, it all went through in the end; the only thing is that it seemed to take eons, and they indicated it was longer as it was a repair under the CGA - they made out that it went to a central NL place for evaluation first...

I'd like $149 to plug an aerial cable into a Tivo, connect to wifi and plug in an HDMI...

Maybe they have had enough requests to warrant such a service?

I'm sure they get people coming in and bugging them about installation problems. Now they can refer these people to the new service.

To be fair its a bit more than that. While we might well be able to do it quickly the average householder may not be that capable.
There are many traps for the unwary
1. Does the home have a wifi access or do they have cat5 access to internet near the Tivo
2. If they are running a locked down wifi then you need to add the MAC address to the router before they can use it.
3. It is not always straight forward to just plug aerial in what if the have a sky box or some other device that is connected to antenna.
4. If it is an older aerial they may  need to have a converter cable cable to get from BNC connectors and the new F type connectors used by Tivo
5 When connected the channel line up does not always give the best results and the installer may have to deselect some channels and use others.
6. Finally users will need some training if they have not used a freeview type box before. there is so much that you can do with Tivo that having someone there to show the new owner what to do would make it a lot easier

That's all well and good - but the average install cost for that sort of thing is $50 - $60.
$149 is simply taking advantage of those who don't know any better.
$199 for the device.
$149 for the install...
Not really a bargain?

When I contact tivo support aka telecom braodband , the nice guy I spoke to said they were under instructions to switch any tivo that was defective whether it was still in warranty or not. Any tivo that was purchased so far should probably still be covered by the CGA, as they have only been in NZ for a few years, unless they have been abused in some way, such as being dropped or banged during operation etc.

I guess it could take 'up to' 2 hours if you don't have a clue at all. Where hte words 'up to' used?
But for the normal person, it does have step by step instructions on the start screens, so it is very basic to setup, probably easier than normal freeview receivers. It could take 3 days if you like me were given a dead one by NL.

Actually we have gone off track there probably my fault. I popped into Bond & Bond at lunchtime and Tivo is $299. Still a good price but not as good as I said it was
