If your remote fails within the warranty period then head back to the shop you bought it from with the receipt. I think you might have a case under the CGA after the warranty period but that is always more difficult to pursue.

I wasn't able to the return this remote because it got submersed in milk although that was unrelated to the slow buttons-failure problem we are experiencing. I don't feel like putting $60 towards another remote that came from the same batch as the first two, so does anyone have recommendations for a third-party replacement remote?

Get a Logitech Harmony. Depending on the model, they will control anywhere from 5 to 15 components. I have had the Harmony One for a number of years now, and it replaced 8 remotes for my various components. Since getting it, I have not had to use any other remote. All the original remotes have been packed away.

Since getting the Logitech Harmony One, and the MagicTV, my wife has no problems watching recorded programs, and even setting up the MagicTV to record what she wants to watch. It makes everything very, very simple to use and operate.

It does take some setting up and tweaking, but I could not do without the Logitech Harmony One. It is highly recommended.

The 3700 has a smart phone remote option i installed it and it looks ok. daycare has learning remotes but i just clean mine even six months or so

Your response poses a number of questions for me.

Do you have a heat pump with a rc and will the Harmony control it?
Is your wife particularly thick that you cite her as being able to use the Harmony successfully?
After setting up and tweaking, will it control your wife for you?

But seriously, I have a Harmony remote, but no heat pump and I few friends have asked me if it would control their heat pump.

I have a Harmony One and like it a lot (having 8 devices sitting under and connected to my TV).

I just had a look at the set-up software and yes, there is an option for controlling a heat pump (and a few other household appliances with infra-red remote controls).

Haven't got it working yet but will phone Logitec support later (they don't open until 1pm NZ time). They have always been very helpful in the past.

Harmony's are great.
The cheapest models will usually be fine.
Just make sure you get one with the 4-coloured buttons (some earlier models didn't).

Setup was much more straightforward than other multi-remotes I've had (Marantz and Pronto).
A Mac or PC is required though.

Looks like the Harmony One will do me. What four buttons are coloured & why does that make a difference over the earlier ones?

Like the ones at the very bottom of the Magic TV remote.

Red/Green/Yellow/Blue

It gets confusing if you don't have these on the Harmony

Most models have them now I think, but check.

Been searching with Google Images but all that I have seen, do not show those 4 coloured buttons on it. The Harmony 900 (and others) have them but the 900 is out of my price range & I also don't need it's RF transmitter.

To those of you who use/have used the Harmony One, how has the omission of those four coloured buttons affected your use of it?

I don't think you need them. When I use the Harmony One to turn on the Magic box, the four coloured buttons come up on the screen.

Latimers, when using the One to record a program on the Magic, how do you choose to record & to choose to record the series or not?

Are you able to use a button on the One, which mimics the Magic's 'Guide' button & when the Guide comes up, what buttons on the One do you use to choose the 'red', 'yellow' & 'blue' equivalents of the Magic?

Getting a bit off topic here, but anyway...

I actually have 2 Harmony remotes, one for my main system in the lounge - a Harmony One, and the other a Harmony 600 for controlling the system in the kids/family room. I have also helped set set up a friend's Harmony 900 and my parents Harmony 700.

Yes I do have a heat pump, and have that programmed into the Harmony One. It is not practical for me to use it to set the temperature, change settings from heat to aircon or program the start and stop timers, since that requires feedback on the Heat Pump remote screen. I mainly use the Harmony One to just turn the heat pump on and off. The heat pump remote is used a couple of times a year if I want to change some of the other settings.

to check if the appliance you want to control is in the Logitech database. Even if it is not, the Harmony remotes are also learning remotes, and can learn commands from other remotes.

The Harmony One does not have the four coloured buttons (red, green, yellow & blue) that most remotes today use to control various functions. All the other Harmony remotes (except for the 1100i) have those buttons. The way around not having those buttons on the Harmony One is to program them into the touchscreen buttons. If you program them in called "red" "green" etc in an activity, they even get a colour-coded background.

I would choose the Harmony remote based on the number of devices you need to control (and allow for a couple of extra devices). The touchscreen on the Harmony One is a big plus, and the lack of coloured buttons is a very minor detraction since they can be programmed into the touchscreen. The Harmony 900 has those buttons, and also support for RF, BUT I actually prefer using my Harmony One. I find it more responsive in operation. For some reason, the Harmony 900 touchscreen scrolls and button presses seem to take longer than my Harmony One.

Hope the above info is useful. I've had my Harmony One for a bit over 3 years now and could not do without it.
