There seems to be some issue about extracting the raw data (essentially EIT) from the MHEG5 carrier if you will. It looks like it can be done, but naturally if there's any change in the format of the origianl, the extraction process will not work until it's modified as well.

The essence here seems to be that MHEG5 used as the EPG source seems to mean you are constrained by the design of the MHEG5 layout etc. This seems to have been done to standardise the user experience between approved boxes etc. Where most others are coming from is that they have superior EPG systems, but don't have the raw data to populate them, and it seems to be proving difficult to sort a reliable method to extract the data.

Given the EIT transmit system is already in place on the UHF platform, why not simply up the data being transmitted on this? I'm sure the manufactuers would leap to include MHEG5 support for additional services if they were implemented here in the future, but they wouldn't have to use the same sub par EPG system being offered currently. Just compare this to a preloaded/buffered EIT EPG on a good sat receiver for instance.

grolschie: Wouldn't a simple solution be to transmit both MHEG5 and EIT EPGs on DVB-T, and let approved receivers use either? Just my $0.02.

You would think... The more I hear about this the more I think Freeview need to review there stand on this.

Question for Freeview is. Is there any technical reason why they cannot populate the entire EIT stream rather then just now-next? I guess what is the justification other then thats what we decided on for refusing to populate the existing EIT stream?

No. It broke because it was reverse engineered and obviously made a few incorrect assumptions when minor changes were made to support the MHEG5 PVR functionality.

Extracing the data could be done for PVR users - the solution that box providers use however is to support the MPEG5 PVR EPG function rather than attempting to extract the EPG data and populate their own EPG system.

Many PVR's would want use their own EPG layout as a point of difference, given how painfully slow the official MHEG5 EPG system is. Given there's no substantial EIT data on offer, the reverse engineering approach seems to be the only way to do it and that just seems a bit unfortunate.

Well if the devs at DVBViewer who are located in Germany and do not have a running MHEG5 system in their country can develop a MHEG application that pulls and displays the data in DVBViewer then I should think it won't be long until someone develops a solution that can be modified easily and quickly per country and broadcaster to pull the data and strip the guts back to XML.

But dreams are free. I know I would pay money for something that did that.
