Yep, you can definitely do that with the DMR-BW850 but apparently because the 880 is freview certified then you cant copy HD content from the HDD to blu ray. I understand the whole copyright protection thing, but because it is freeview, it is free to air so you should be able to simply archive stuff to blu-ray. Pretty crappy Panasonic

That's not 'crappy' of Panasonic...
It is a requirement of Freeview accredited items.
Unfortunately there is no 'do it all' box.
I guess Freeview users get to keep waiting.

When setting a timer recording on the BW850, you have a number of recording location option. You can choose to timer record to the HDD, Blu-Ray or DVD. DVD is only in standard definition, but both the HDD and Blu-Ray can be set to HiDef. Anyone know if the BW880 can timer record directly to a Blu-Ray in HiDef?

Panasonic's own website says the BW880 records in HD onto Blu-ray discs as does Jb Hi-fi's.

I have been with a Panasonic HDD recorder since they first came out many years ago and this thread has been very helpful in understanding the latest tactics re Freeview and the commercial world.

Being a long time theater person, both onstage and directing I am very well aware of the need for continuity and the way the human brain works to take one inside the drama. Modern TV is such a mess of interruptions that it is impossible to go there.

Enough of that - my Panasonic HDD has been used almost exclusively to record and edit out the 'interruptions' in recorded programs - I rarely watch anything live, preferring to edit and watch later. But it is long overdue for an upgrade and with it Freeview Sky ...

However in reading extensively on GZ I am now concluding that Freeview accreditation, Sky etc, are starting to lock down their products to ensure the poor bloody viewers have to endure the mindless banter of the advertiser?

Questions - I would like to upgrade my Panasonic with a later model:

1) Is "Partial Delete" available?
2) Is more general editing - top and tailing etc available?
3) Vu+Duo - does it allow editing?
4) Does EPG certification mean the lock out of some features

I am coming to the conclusion that the best way forward may be to purchase an older Panny from our favourite auction site, and put up with no EPG etc.

Any comments and advice appreciated

I own BW880 and yes partial delete still available . unfortunately it does not have ad skip button ( the button that skip in 1 min intervals). previously i used to have bw850 which had to be replaced with new one since it had some hardware problem. i miss this button quite bit as skipping adds is, only way is to fast forward button.
there is a time splip button but you've to specify how many minutes you want to skip every time!

BTW with partial delete, i find that it just takes too much time to edit (cut out the parts). i rather watch move/show and fastforward.

Great - thanks for that ... I agree entirely with the time taken comment too - but I get so furious with the constant interruptions, even using the skip buttons, that editing them out is a safer option for me, wifey, and the gear!

Using the 880 if you're patient, or have used the function before, you can edit and compile show(s) together. This is achieved by cutting the promo before the show: deleting the comm breaks, deleting the follow-on after the credits: and joining it on to the next episode (if you wish). I think you're limited to 32 cuts that's all. For instance I left the HD Demo channel recording for a couple of hours, then compiled a few good clips that I found as I skipped through it: like Tony Monk's NZ aerial shots and a bit of nature stuff, into a 7minute HD demo.

I havn't tried recording or copying to blu ray yet, so I don't know how bad the imbedded copy protection is. I'd welcome someone's experience with this.

i have a vu+duo which can be edited but i dont bother as the number buttons can be programmed to skip, i have 10sec, 30sec & 3min .
the problem or issue is if you want mehg5 epg with series link then you cant edit, eit epg and edit away but no series link .
i also use a magictv dvr and find the 4minute skip function very use full and i get series Link.

Awesome - the Panny has the skip forward button - OK for say the News etc - but when I'm engrossed in Poirot or Coro St (truly!) it would be a mad grab for the remote, spilling my beer down the bib and by the time I've oriented the thing, found the button etc, I've endured 30seconds or more of an ad imploring me not to drink and drive ... or worse still, and ad for viagra which really hits below the belt!

Horses for courses - I like to clean all the junk out of a prg then really sit back and enjoy it -

Now - Vu+Duo - I'm really keen on this beastie but ... does it have S, Composite, Component inputs to record from? Like the Panny's AV1 ... 4?

Thanks Wiredr - it looked that way to me too but I was hoping I'd missed something. Other modern PVR's are the same.

Looks like it will be a couple of older HDMI HDD's with a few smarts and a nice Freeview box with a couple of LNB bits for my two dishes.

I have a media player/USB drive thing - but getting the files off the HDD into the mediaplayer is a pest too - I thought I could use the DVDRAM function and read the disk with the PC for copying over to the USB HDD - but it dubs as one contiguous file with item markers embedded within - being a .VRO type file it confuses the file splitting software which gives up at the first marker.

I think my original comments were right - the commercial issues surrounding these things, are making the manufacturers conform to the advertisers needs - after all, the first HDD recorder had a function to automatically remove ad breaks - it did this with continuous frame analysis and paused when the frame analysis codes changed, and started again when they returned - apparently it was very successful but the uproar from the advertisers put paid to it.

I don't watch live TV, and record to view later and skip through the ads. I originally got a Zinwell 640PVR for the Freeview HD and 8day EPG guide. Then transferred any programs to a Panasonic EH55 for editing and burning to DVD.

Was frustrating to only use the x16 fast forward through ads on the Zinwell (back to the VHS days). So looked for a DVD recorder with Freeview channels, and manual skip and time slip buttons on the remote.

Tested the BW880, but as Freeview-certified it has only a time slip button limited to 10min increments fwd/rvs (no 1min increments).

I ultimately purchased a DMR-XW350 in NZ without full EPG, but with a 1 min fwd skip button, and time slip button with 1min and 10min fwd/rvs. Also has partial delete, and can then save to hdd or archive to DVD. My Zinwell has 8day EPG program info, so can update the XW350 once a week with a few programs (actually the majority of my programs are daily or weekly, so very few new updates).

Meets my basic needs, and in a single unit.

I'm interested in purchasing a BW880 but must admit the lack of Ad skipping is a real deal breaker. Has anyone who owns a BW880 tried to use a Harmony remote using an overseas model from the database to see if Ad skipping has been disabled in the firmware or Panasonic have just supplied a different remote for NZ.

I have tried this for the Magic TV but not the Panasonic.
However the Magic TV is done in the Magic box not the remote. I suspect the Panasonic will be the same.

Hey , I'm seriously thinking about grabbing an 880 in the new year, but I need to know one thing, does it pass through the regular Digital MUXs on its RF out?

I mean if you have a Freeview TV down the line can you simply plug them into the RF output and then use the onboard decoder?

The reason I want to know is it will change my RF network topology if it doesn't and will require more splitters and a recombiner...
