I can't say for sure as I don't have a blu ray drive (only PS3) but the 1080P quicktime trailers I have downloaded play fine on my 3G P4. The clips are avc (H.264) and peak at around 20Mbits. My CPU usage seems to stay under 25%. The 8500 is awesome, I was getting 90% cpu with 1080i with my old 6600gt and it didn't play back smooth. I was execting to have to upgrade my mb and cpu for freeview.

HTPC: 3G P4, 2GB RAM, Nvidia 8500GT, HVR 2200 (for FreeviewHD), 2x Hauppauge PVR-150 (1 for analog TV + 1 for AV input), Windows 7
Display: 42" Panasonic Plasma
Blu Ray/Games: PS3

Mattv: Slightly off topic but can anyone confirm whether all the compatible cards that are mentioned here will work with blu-ray h.264 encoded discs at 1080p resolution? in particular will the 8500GT have enough "grunt" for 1080p or would you suggest going for a 9600GT? (Would rather save myself $150 odd but want to furture proof things a little too)

The 8500GT will happily do 1080p blu-ray. The only reason to go higher is if you intend to use the PC for gaming.

Unsure if this is of topic or not, I note that a just released review n the Aust PC Authority Mag on Graphic Card states that 9600GT is longer than the 8600GT and I'm wondering if the 9600GT will fit in my Silverstone LC16M HTPC Case.

Can anyone comment on this, its widely known that the DVD bay restricts the length of card that can be used in this case. Any advise welcomed, I'm looking at buying this one http://pcpacific.net/product_info.php?products_id=4619

I would be asking the supplier for the length of the card or the manufacturer. I have the same case and know I had a great deal of trouble getting a 7800GT in and the 8800GT I have in my main PC would not even get close to fitting. However the 8500GT I got has a heap of room.

Also check if it has additional power plug. If it does that makes the card effectively longer again.

I wonder if you can help me. I have the same videocard as you and want to use the spdif connection on it but I cant find anymore info on it as such. The manual and XFX website certainly mention nothing. Since theirs 2 connectors on the card, could you tell me which one is the spdif (im guessing its the top connector as the bottom connector looks more like a fan connection) and what/where you plug the other end into ie. mobo onboard sound or PCI card etc.I would try either myself, but it looks like I need to purchase a soundcard with the right connection too.

On a side note relating to the videocard, I previously had an ATi2400XT which has issues as previously mentioned in this thread, but one thing it did do well was displaying interlaced video. The 8500GT shows a definate interlaced flicker on channels like TVNZ6 that the ATi2400XT did not. Is this normal or have I not setup something quite right?

Any comments much appreciated.

OK as you suggest it is the top connector as below.

You will need to either have spdif out on your motherboard sound or on your addin card sound whichever you are using. You need to connect to the SPDIF0 and GND pins. DO NOT connect to the +5v if there are three pins.

Do you know how the spdif passthrough works? Are they using spare pins on the DVI connector for the audio?
Do you need to use a special HDMI adaptor or are you using a generic DVI - HDMI cable straight off the DVI socket?

I'm still having problems with my MSI 8500GT crashing randomly and am considering changing to another brand.
From what you have pointed out, there isn't really any benefit to a card with a native HDMI socket as long as I get one with the DVI spdif audio passthrough right?

No you dont need a special adapter as long as the adapter is DVI-I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface) it will pass through the spdif signal. You can either use an adapter to HDMI-HDMI or a DVI-HDMI cable. I am using the latter.

Correct just make sure it has the passthough. I am not sure if all do or not. It seems from another post that it needs to be a card with a HDMI transmitter chip. http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/community/video-audio-cards-vista/29119-hdmi-card-audio.html Third post down...

Kia ora guys, my first post here! I was just wondering if absolutely anyone out there has had any luck with freeview dvb-t with a 8800gtx?
I was hoping to use my new PC setup 50/50 for gaming and watching high def movies and freeview. Though some of the comments here though have left me a little disheartened in my quest for a PC equilibrium haha.

Sharing any experiences or knowledge would greatly appreciated!

8800gtx will easily play anything you throw at it. Just make sure you have hardware accelerated codecs, currently the only good ones are Cyberlink.

On paper it shouldn't perform as well as an 8600 GT

Edit: from page 4 of this thread: The 8800GTX is Gen 1 Purevideo HD only, It isnt as good as i would have hoped.

I cant speak from experiance however with that CPU I would have thought you would be fine.
