Yes there are too many useless channels for sure
My 2yo LD LCD TV shows HD 1080i for satellite Freeview.
Is the 1080i - interlaced a transmission or TV configuration?

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

The 1080i is what is transmitted. It takes less bandwidth than a proper 1080p transmission, but gives you all the complications of deinterlacing. Fortunately modern TVs are just fine with 1080i, but if you want to record 1080i and then convert it to something else or edit it, you have to deal with deinterlacing. There are lots of examples on the net where someone missed deinterlacing the video and there are characteristic artifacts I call "jaggies" around the outlines of things as a result.

Upgrading the regions to HD won't cost them their regional advertising revenue.
There isn't sufficient capacity on their transponder for 4 HD feeds of TVNZ 1. Right now they have 3 HD channels (1,2, Duke) plus 7 SD Channels (+1 versions, 3 Regional TVNZ 1 plus Maori).
Correct. But like I said, it doesn't cost them their regional advertising revenue.
Which raises the question, do they actually know how many properties are using satellite dishes where UHF is present as well?
I'm guessing the numbers are small enough it won't make a difference by your comments, but a lot of houses still have crap antennas and use satellite dishes, especially the older population that don't stream but have used Sky dishes previously, even tough UHF is available.
I have already reset my receivers to Auckland region. I don't care what spots are played, I'm not watching SD when there's HD available on the same box.
But I would be curious as to what the numbers are for satellite viewers when marketing to regional advertisers. It must be enough to warrant regional feeds being on satellite in the first place, or they wouldn't be doing it.
A regional advertiser isn't going to pay nation-wide spot rates either.

So 3 HD channels and 6 SD
Such a waste of bandwidth to be broadcasting four copies of the same channel most of the time. Would be a real shame if someone were to start a campaign to inform people that they can just set their region to Auckland and get HD. 😀
I would split the sd regional tv1's and just merge lower north island /south island into one merged TV1 HD "south" channel if they insist on keeping the regional advertising thing going.
Duke+1 , TV1+1,TV2 +1 need to go! does Anyone watch them

It is the kids bedtime at our house between 6.30pm - 7.30pm which means I always miss the sports new (the only news I am interested in).
So I watch TV1+1 almost every night!

It makes you wonder too: is someone from, say, Opotiki going to get any benefit from Hamilton ads as opposed to Auckland ads?

And if I was to want to watch the TV news then a +2 or +2.5 channel would suit me more.
This is a solution to a problem that is solved with video recorders. Its a waste of transponder space to send the same stuff out with an hour delay when there are on demand services and recorders available.

Yep that is a fair point - plus I can easily watch the sport news delayed on TVNZ on demand.
I use +1 about as much as I use the unplussed channels. I find it convenient if I have missed the start of something I wanted to see (happens, though not often). I would miss it, though not much. I mainly use it for the news.

Can somebody confirm that the TVNZ transponder channels have good audio sync please?
My (fairly dated) DVB-S2 box has good audio sync on the Kordia and Sky transponder channels, but about 1 second lag on all of the TVNZ transponder channels.
I suspect that my receiver might simply be showing it's age, but just want to confirm before I buy a replacement.
Cheers.
P.S. The improvement in picture quality is very noticeable. I can see this being the death of terrestrial since why have parallel broadcasts, and satellite covers the places that fibre doesn't reach.
