Actually, I've found the reverse. Dolby is louder.

There are some great things about the Panasonic and some drawbacks. I find it pretty unbelievable that, for instance, in playing MP3 or CD music, you cannot specifically enter the track number directly. If you have one large MP3 folder/album, like I have, this then requires quite a bit of wading through. It doesn't even have next/prev page buttons, unless I've missed something. Also, when copying MP3s to the hard drive, you can only copy one folder/album at a time. I'd have liked to have been able to copy all MP3s on the CD, DVD, or flash drive with one press of a button.

Jaxson: A lot of freeview products behave like this. There are pros and cons to which ever option it defaults to.

The Dolby audio appears to be a lot quieter than the basic AAC audio on all the other channels. If it defaults to Dolby you'll be turning up the volume on TV3 and then blasting it out if you change to another channel with AAC. On the flipside though, if it defaults to Dolby then you don't have to do anything else if you want 5.1 sound on certain shows.

This used to be a problem but over the past few months I have not noticed any difference between the two.  Just wish TVNZ would get it's HD act together..

Cool, glad to hear it. In that case, yeah I think it should probably default to dolby if available.

Of course that's a pain in the backside for anyone wanting to use it as a media player for a large music collection. However I suspect that most buyers of these Panasonic recorders will only really care about recording and playing Freeview|HD programmes, and playing Blu-Ray or DVDs. They won't even try out the other functions.

As regards to MP3 playing ability and quality of sound, I've found Panasonic to be the best and most consistent. That's why I recently bought a Panasonic MP3 player for my car. This is slightly OT, but my Pioneer 400GB recorder, which I bought way after my original Panasonic 80GB recorder, won't recognise some MP3s at all, others it plays as mono instead of stereo, and for others the sound is distorted. It sounds like it had old codecs, but my original Panasonic could always play any MP3 I threw at it.

WHAT! Well, that's $176 I'll never get back. Is it on special just for a few days or is it the regular price?

As I also mentioned in the other forum you posted this:

I just rang them. That's not right. You must have looked at the wrong ones or something. They've only just dropped the price to $1770 from full retail of $2000. They've never been that low.

rusty- as i posted over at audioenz:
that's definitly the price they had on them. i did a double take as i was surprised how cheap they were. it's pretty hard to confuse them with anything else. there's no other panasonic twin digital tuner, blu-ray recorder pvr on the market as far as i know.
the other thing is i've found on a couple of occasions that hn have quoted me a different price on equipment over the phone to what they have it for in-store. could be that the person on the phone is looking at the price on the computer and that is different to the in-store special price.

I have just come back from Melbourne, where AV stores also had 2 other models of Panna recorders. A blu-ray HDD recorder with a 250GB HDD (BW750) and a DVD/HDD recorder with a 500GB HDD. While I struggle to see the point of a hi-def recorder with a puny 250GB storage I hope the 500GB DVD model (the BW450) makes it to these shores with appropriate freeview tuners. Prices were very similar to here by the time you converted AUD to NZD. The equivalent of the BW850 has been on the market in Oz for almost 12 months.

HN Moorhouse was $998 around 2 p.m., HN Northwood was $1098 30 minutes earlier.

I take it you are referring to the 250GB version without BluRay.

I'm wondering if this Panasonic Recorder could help with an issue I have..my freeview picture degrades significantly through my current hd/dvd recorder. It is connected by rca cables which I assume is the issue. Would a s video cable be any improvement?

This recorder would bypass this step as it is all in one so to speak.
