Glad you got it working. And thinking about cb1's comment, when I said I used a different firmware, yes I went back to the original unmodified firmware from the website.
This works sometimes only. I have two units, Remotes from both suffered this problem. I cleaned them twice. The third time I sent them to Dishtv under warranty to clean. They only lasted a few weeks. My Sony remotes have lasted 14 years and still working !!!
The question is "Why is there oil in an electronic gadget"
My take is that they have stupidly used some conductive oil within the silicone keypad. Once the oil starts leaking, the keypad doesn't work that well. I will test the conductivity next time I open it.
They have replaced one remote under warranty.... I am still hassling them to replace the other one.
With all the other problems with the 3600 and unresponsiveness from dishtv, why would you bother buying anything they import.

Hi Guys I too have suffered from this problem but Im sure this fix was mentioned here on the forum but try the following ...
over time the highly used buttons seem to develop some sort of residue build up ... simple fix gentally { and I mean gentally } remove the back cover plate to the remote ... it is held on with one screw under the battery cover { remove batteries} and four small plastic tags located around the remote .... once this plate is removed remove the PCB { printed circuit board } turn it over so you can have a good look at the non functioning buttons you will probably see a small "film"/residue build up on the solder joints give this a very good clean with a lint free cloth to remove the residue ... then take an old school rubber { eraser } and give the solder joints a good polish ... this helps clean the joint up , also remove any residue from the white plastic buttons { im sure it shows up as a black residue on the white button plate } once its all clean reassemble the remote ... I have done this a couple of times and its fixed it straight away ... hope that helps .

Interesting, my 3600 has been a rock solid performer over the 4-5 years I've had it (new remote and random restart issues aside) and I've never had anything but great service from DishTV.

You have been lucky then. Despite the issues I did buy a second unit purely because feature wise it was miles ahead of anything at that time. The third unit I purchased (not Magic box) for the kids, they hate. :-)
For a year we had to use two remotes together as some buttons would work on one, some on the other. And we had to take them upstairs and then back downstairs every few hours. I received one free replacement remote, only after I hassled the directors with personal letters to their homes for 4 months. But I needed two, and I am back to polite hassling again. I am almost at the point where I want to take them to small claims court for a full refund of both units. Because the new remote will only last 6-8 months anyway !!!
Maybe DishTv should just buy everyone a harmony remote :-)
Other issues - early death of hard disks, dishtv refused to repair, so I put in 2TB in myself. Several recordings will not play if you pause - they keep going into loops. If you dont pause, they will play. You have to reboot it once a week because it keeps going slower and slower. For the past few months, it reboots by itself at most annoying times, several times a week. It misses recordings - my guess is because its just gone so slow it just cant do it. Its amplifiers /decoders are not the best. Five other appliances of various brands would all work fine with freeview, but magic boxes would not. Even after I installed amplifiers just for them. Eventually I had to install the best antenna I could buy, on the tallest pole I could get the installer to use.
yep , changed to a harmony and never looked back DONT spend good money on the std remote, get a harmony, it will likely replace every remote you have and automated startups are AWESOME , turns on magic , tv stereo and configures all settings with one button

I use the Harmony One remote, which will control up to 15 different appliances. Other models of Harmony can control less, so do check that feature. It's a great remote and the phone support is the best I have ever come across!
harmony one is no longer a current model and the 650 still is and does 8 appliances so could be ok for your needs at 1/5th or 1/10th of the cost of the current flagship models, which i have to say are pretty cool also :)
I actually rather like the original magic remote. I've never had a problem with it but I've replaced it with a $20 Harmony (200 I think) because I wanted to control more appliances. The Harmony key layout is not as user-friendly.
For the record, I believe the oily substance is a plasticizer added to a (probably pvc) membrane to allow it to flex. It migrates over time and contaminates the contact area. Elevated temperature and pressure seem to increase its rate of migration.
One could try soaking the membrane in a solvent for a while to liberate any free plasticizer near the surface. If you don't know what the oil is, don't ingest it. It quite likely contains phthalate esters which are banned as endocrine disruptors under Europe's RoHS legislation.
