We were expecting a home shopping channel, but I heard that isn't going to happen now.

So, when will TVNZ tell us what will be on button #7 after TVNZ7 goes away? Or is there still hope that it will be saved?

Do any TVNZ spies on the forum want to spill it all for us?

Some people where saying that tvnz7 was going to continue but with adverts, but I can find no evidence of this. The reports I have seen say it is shutting down. Perhaps it will become a TV1plus1. I hope if it isn't used, that another tv station gets allocated it to use for something. I am sure that some channels have a lot of good content that they never show, or only show in offpeak times.

I heard the "continue with ads" idea out there too. I think the problem is that there's not enough advertising money out there for the existing channels. TVNZ would lose advertising from TV1 and TV2 as advertisers took the cheaper options on the lower rating channels. The catch 22 of wanting ratings but not at the expense of the other channels either. Most TVNZ7 viewers would be those watching TV1 the rest of the time.

That would be the cheapest option for them to do (other than a blank screen!). The next cheapest might be BBC World 24/7, but it also might cost them in TV1 ratings loss at times.

I think that was just wishful thinking on the part of a few people who dearly wanted it to be true. Rick Ellis said last year that it could not continue even with advertising. It is definitely shutting down at the end of June. TVNZ is currently going through the process with effected staff, which is a pretty final thing for the channel.

That wikipedia page keeps changing, but it doesn't say what it's future is either. A few weeks ago I recall it had on it that an announcement had been made to close it. But that now looks to have been removed. So I don't think it is the most reliable source.

But this news article http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10789122 say it will 'go off air'. What does 'Go off Air' mean? To me it means that it will cease broadcasting. It also says there aren't any alternative proposals for the ongoing funding of TVNZ7. So if there were plans for advertising on it, I am sure it would have been mentioned.

Unlikely to be BBC as that cost money.  remember a couple of years ago they were going to ditch the overnite feed because of cost but left it as it was due to protests.

I would expect the see the overnite feed go as well to save money and because Igloo also has it..

New Zealand is too small to get more FTA channels and it is hard to get them on FTA, TVNZ will sell it off we should know in May about the future of Freeview Channel 7

I was present at the launch of TVNZ7 held in the grand ballroom at Parliament.  It was a grand affair, sat with big wigs including Rick Ellis, Paul Holmes, Anthony Stenning, etc all at the same table as me.  Used the same flash loo that Rob Muldoon used.  Ahh what memories...   Now it's going.  Bloody stupid but that seems to be this Govt all over.  Save public funds but waste it on other crap.

Pay no attention to any wiki page that says TVNZ 7 will continue with advertising. Some (perhaps well meaning) person has read a John Drinnan article and completely misinterpreted it. The article never came close to even a suggestion that 7 would continue with adverts (in fact, the article claimed that there had been consideration to running it as a home shopping channel which would still have meant the demise of TVNZ 7. It went on to say that would not happen) and that is all that it takes for some people to edit a wiki page and create a lot o confusion.

Having thought about it for a while now. I would settle for a TV1+1 channel. It is preferable to black and silence or a place holding graphic still.
