Is there any chance in the future that Freeview will get TVNZ Heartland if they are shutting down TVNZ 7?

That would be fantastic, but would be totally out of character with TVNZ's commitment to supporting freeview. I believe that Sky pay for that channel exclusively. The contract wouldn't allow for it to go free to air. I would expect heartland to be a selling point for the Igloo platform.

So... Taxpayer funded tv history is only available via pay tv. Bring back the charter!

I don't know how they got away with putting taxpayer funded tv exclusively onto a paytv network. I wonder if someone wanted to setup a new freeview channel with that content, whether they would be allowed to use it, eg. who actually owns that content? i would expect that it would be NZ taxpayer owned.

All that historic NZ content (country calendar and it's in the bag, etc) should be free for access for all NZers. So maybe a channel should be setup with the same content in competition with Heartland and on Freeview by another Broadcaster. That would scare TVNZ.

Perhaps an online channel. Perhaps an ISP could step in and have free unmetered access to all that content.

Confirmed: TVNZ has advised Freeview NZ that something will be replacing TVNZ 7 in June, but they dont know what with as of yet.

ChoiceTV looks like its going to fill a bit of kiwi show gap

(while hiding itself as a food channel)

And a whole heap of BBC stuff like Hairy Bikers and the likes.

Starts this weekend.

I think it was obvious that they were going to do something with it, as they wouldn't want to lose the channel to someone else. But I just hope it won't be anything like 6 has become, which is cr@p. Choice tv looks like it will fill some of the gap that was on tvnz 7, with some of their educational programs.

There's no 'getting away' with it necessary. All the Heartland content has already screened several times over, some as far back as 30 years ago (and beyond). The public has already got its moneys worth out of it.

As to who owns it - well, TVNZ owns it of course.

Well a share of the profits acrue to the taxpayer funded tv network (marginally reducing the burden on taxpayers for providing locally-based TV), so its hard to see a problem here. SkyTV pays TVNZ for the production of Heartland/use of content. Its a two-way street, and there is something in it for the taxpayer as well as Sky.

Only if TVNZ felt that putting out this way with an advertising-supported revenue stream would be both:
- commercially viable; and
- a better commercial proposition that what they can extract from Sky

Personally, I don't have any problem with TVNZ (which is struggling a bit, profitable but not a greatly so) making some extra cash by charging Sky to rebroadcast old material that would likely otherwise just moulder in a vault. I doubt there is a viable proposition to put it out using a free-to-air model instead. Personally, I virtually never watch it.

Just be grateful we are not like BBC who have to pay Murdoch's B-Sky-B for the privilege of putting BBC channels  on the air.  At that same time being stopped by Governments from having their own satellite system
I guess we will get same idea here before long.

As for a replacement of TV7 last I heard from Herald it was going to be a 24 hour shopping channel

I had read that the shopping channel had been axed as an ideal. I think many people would prefer nothing than a shopping channel selling cheap chinese rubbuish. There are already enough shopping programs/adverts,

TVNZ are also paying Sky to be on their system.

The govenment stopped TVNZ from starting their own satellite network when sky satellite was relatively young - there were millions already invested and plans were well advanced but the govenment of the time stopped it.

Didn't that become the  Freeview satellite system??
