Hi all, quick question

Can a dtv decoder used in australia be used to revieve freeview with or without the epg?

I have a friend who has just moved back from aussie and bought a panasonic dmr-xw350 dvd recorder which he used to watch dtv in australia.

In the instruction manual it says its compatible with australia, dvb-t vhf and al uhf but the freeview wikipedia page says they also use dvb-t so I assumed it would be compatible.

Other posts on geekzone have suggested the model should be compatible but I'm wondering if its just because this unit was purchased in australia that they might have a slight variation on the dvb-t standard?

The unit at the moment just won't find any channels when autotuning or manually entering frequencies.

Thanks

You would need to estabish whether it support MPEG4/H.264 and 8MHz channel stepping. Australia uses MPEG2 and 7MHz channel stepping. It certainly won't get an EPG as it won't support MHEG5.

99% of DVB-T devices are incompatible with the standards used in Aussie. Some newer devices support allow you to set the country you are in.

+1
It won't work in NZ.
The NZ model is the xw380 which has been discontinued according to their website.
Newer models are available.

wont work here as they dont have 8mhz stepping.
I have an Australian dvb-t recorder here I also use for freeview but had to manually set up all channels.  It gives the option of 7mhz or 8mhz.  Tediuos changing but good once setup and only now next epg.
I know someone who brought a Tivo from Aussie to here and it worked so obviously it has the 8mhz stepping somehow when you select New Zealand in the setup

But it is rare that any will work here from Aussie market
