Probably need more information such as room size, intended purpose (gaming, movies, sport), desired size, perhaps room lighting, budget etc...

Everything comes with a Freeview tuner these days.

Why not plasma?...best picture ever IMO, LED is getting close, but not there yet.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Yeah as above, just for interests (humour) sake, could you explain why you've ruled out plasma please?

Also as above, could you explain what you think makes a good TV and then someone will assist you with a make/model that satisfies your requirements.

I assumed plasmas were lower resolution and high latency.
Dad has an old one and it looks like crap

I think Bond and Bond had a basic 2012 Samsung 42" LED + Bluray played for $999 a week or two ago.
is that a good offer?

All TV's, regardless of style will essentially be one of two display resolution these days, 'HD Ready'/720p max or "Full HD'/1080p max.  Therefore you're not going to find too many variations on this aspect.

High Latency?  If you're meaning refresh rates or similar, then fundamentally plasma beats LCD anyway.  Though, in practise the delays are more to do with the picture processor deciding what to send to the panel than the response time of the panel itself.  Fast panels can have crap electronics behind them, so basically a crap TV will be a crap TV because it's a crap TV, not just because it's LCD or Plasma.

LED is just LCD by the way, only LED sets use (drum roll please...) LED's as a back light instead of fluorescent tubes.

If your Dad's one is old and crap, you've probably covered why it's not very good.  Anything you buy now should surpass this, be it LCD or plasma.  Look out for the major players and you'll be right, ie Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic etc.

I guess you realise and LED TV is just an LCD tv tarted up to extract a few more bucks from the ever guillible public. Sure the backlighting is different but its still back lit. While getting close to plasma the overall view still tends towards blacks not being quite as good as the blacks on plasma.

Depreciation on LED/LCD/Plasma is probably around the same and will be more than any variance in energy consumption.

Disc - just bought a plasma. Had a warmer more natutral feel to it than LCD's. But then I'm looking for the colour of grass that resemble my local park rather than someting on the outskirts of Chernobyl.

Do you run it with the motion flow enabled? I have it turned off, as I think it makes the picture look weird. I think they call it the soap opera effect.

Go out and by a Panasonic ST50, then sit and contemplate your lack of insight and prejudice that could have led you towards an inferior purchase.
