Bought a Transonic UHF freeview decoder from warehouse last week and have a couple of problems->

Live in Christchurch out airport way,

1-> Can't get TVNZ freeview signal very well, signal breaks up, is un-watchable, the rest are fine.

2-> When the decoder is not on it 'kills' the analog signal? do all UHF decoders do this?, when TV/DVD recorder is on there is no signal, turning on the Freeview brings it back instanly, turn off freeview and about 1-2 minutes lose anolog signal again??

Any help with this or is the unit faulty.

You should not be passing the terrestrial signal through the decoder. Decoder most likely has an amp in it that it switches off. Use a splitter instead and feed both devices directly.

If you can't receive all 3 muxes from that close to Sugarloaf (< 15 km) then your UHF antenna install is substandard and needs attention. Do you even have an externally mounted horizontally polarised UHF antenna?? What is your analog Maori TV (channel 46) or Prime (62) reception like??? Both these channels should be perfect as around 64 dBW, digital transmissions are only 47 dBw on channels 47, 49 and 50.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I think you need to give some more information.

1) Inside/Outside aerial? (Does it have the UHF bit - the smaller arms).
2) How is the Freeview box connected to the TV?
3) What sort of TV
4) Maybe best to just leave the TV/DVD recorder out of the equation (ie disconnect it for the purposes of testing).

Just for starters it sounds like the signal is marginal on the TVNZ mux - all the TVNZ channels go out one signal effectively - so they will all behave the same. Usually something like you have described indicates reception issues.

Thanks for the replies, I did not know not to pass the signal through the decoder to tv, it has a in and out like a DVD/VHS recorder so you think you would, anyway have put throught DVD REC first then to freeview, so I can still rec analog tv, I will get a spitter soon.
My prime/Maori is not the best on analog, so will have to check aerial, it is a UHF and a VHF above it with a diplexer (or something) box in between them.

I tried a DVD-T USB reciever on laptop to aerial connection and it picked up all channels and played TVNZ fine.

TV is a 32" Sony

I had weird reception probs on my first Transonic box. Worked well enough during daytime, turned progressively to crap as evening and darkness approached. Returned to outlet for replacement. Problem solved. Well pleased for $70.

My only problems with it are the remote and that absrud blue LED on the front of it.

Sensitivity is great on my one, works ok upstairs with about a foot of wire in the antenna socket.

I am using the RF passthru on one in the garage so I still get my analog modulators on the TV. Not tried it with the box "off" as I just flick the whole lot off on a powerstrip when done, however it does degrade the analog passthru vs a direct connection.
