Hi

Hastings goes digital in September.  Is it possible to have a splitter, and cabling run from one freeview decoder to multiple television sets?

Thanks

Yes, it's just a tv aerial based system like you're used to. Just happens to be digital and instead of, with analogue, a low signal causing ghosting etc, you'll get a pixellated or no picture on too many, or badly done splits.

Make sure you get a proper UHF splitter and good connectors and you should have no problems. I split 1 aerial into 4 (to run a 3 tuner computer + a TV)

Hold on, are you meaning have just one freeview box in a house, feeding pictures to multiple TV's?

Yes you can do this, but you're not splitting the signal on the aerial side. The aerial will run to a freeview box and then you'll need to split the output from the unit to multiple TV's. It's not an ideal setup though, as you'll all be on the same channel at a time, and the picture quality is likely to be average at best.

For the money, you'd be better to split the aerial or satellite signal and put a decoder at every TV, or sell your TV and put money towards a newer TV with freeview built in etc. For the record, Hastings is already running digital, so it's more that analogue will drop off in September, rather than digital being added then.

If you're going to split the modulated RF output of a STB you'll firstly need to buy a box that supports RF output - many don't. If it doesn't you'll need to buy a RF modulator. You're then stuck with the limitation of only watching a single channel throughout the house.

By far the best approach is to buy a STB for every TV, there are plenty out there now under $100

Thanks for the help.  I'm going to buy a new television, as I don't watch all that much, and only have one set.  I asked that for a friend who has sets in both bedrooms as well as the living area.

Thanks a lot.

1. If you are on a terrestrial signal

If you are buying a new TV, it should be able to tune Freeview and you won't need to run cabling from the decoder. It's the aerial you want to split (ie before it goes into the set top box, not the TV signal that comes out of it). Dick Smith sell the necessary UHF splitter for $14.99. You go:

Aerial ----->Splitter -------> existing STB
.                  |
.                  ---------->New TV

2. If you are on a satellite

It's the cable from the satellite you need to split, an appropriate splitter costs $20 at Dick Smith and you will also need a second STB for the new TV. they aren't expensive - I got a Transonic one for a relative for $69 from the Warehouse. You go:

Sat Dish ----->Splitter -------> existing STB
.                      |
.                       ---------->STB------> New TV

Edit: Tried to make the diagrams look better
