I need a simple "tivo like" PVR for someone who can only receive freeview via satelite. Bonus points if it has a universal remote with it like the tivo does. This is for an elderly person that already has a freeview decoder ( UltraPlus-720HDMI ) but doesnt find that easy to use.

Price doesnt really matter. It is wanted for recording shows easily and I think having series link like ability would be great. No problem with having to add a hard drive either internally or externally as I can do that all during setup.

Any recommendations?

With series link you can even do this in advance for them which is pretty cool.
That way their shows just 'turn up' magically....

In the DVB-S world there really are only a handful of options, so you can't be that picky unfortunately.

MySky, $18.70/month to receive just the Freeview channels.
You can't beat a MySky for simplicity, and if it craps out, they fix it.

There is (or at least used to be; I can't find it on the site) a much cheaper plan that only includes the free-to-air channels.

As a Grandparent I have a Dish S7090PVR. It is as easy as pie, is NZ developed and the Dish people are great to work with.

Thanks for the recommendations. Regarding Sky it wouldn't be a goer, this is for a unit that has freeview distributed to all the units from a central dish, not sure if in the complex your allowed to have sky installed on the roof of the unit, but it probably wouldn't be considered worth it to the person I don't think.

I'll give the satBox Ultra S7090PVR a good look today if I can find one in the shops.

I see you are already on the hunt, but would second that recommendation. If my ageing mother can figure one out then anyone can. Great NZ support for Dish products IME.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

You need to pay for a Sky install, but $18.70 a month gives the Freeview channels except Choice, and that would be a problem because..........?
They also throw in a couple of Sky basics each month.
(I am not on commission from Sky)

Probably the bit about "for someone who can only receive freeview via satelite"

TIVO, at least the mainstream version sold here in NZ shops is terrestrial/UHF only, not satellite.

Formally there are only 2 approved satellite PVR units from freeview, which they call MyFreeview devices:
