Hi,

I have relatives who live in Taupo and it's about time they sort themselves and get onto FreeviewHD - not only because the government is about to pull the plug on analog television, but also because they have owned a Full HD television for at least a couple of years and they should use it to their potential.

However, before I start "cracking the whip", I need some advise. I'm a little out of the loop in respect to DVB-T stuff. I know a reasonable amount, however I decided to go down the MySky HDi path several years ago and frankly have never looked back.

So, my question is:

1) What is a reasonable, middle of the road, UHF aerial you would recommend someone in Taupo use for DVB-T?
2) What is a reasonable, middle of the road, DVB-T PVR unit, you would recommend?

Interested to hear peoples comments.

Cheers,
BuckoNZ

If you can still get a TiVo from Bond+Bond or Noel Leeming, they are really good (as long as they have WiFi or can connect to broadband).

Most of the retailers sell UHF aerial kits, I don't know where the Taupo signal comes from or where your parents are, but these kits usually do a fine job.

I also would recommend a Tivo. Once setup very easy to use. Really nice unit.  Broadband a must to setup.
I have 2 units.  Decided tio set the 2nd unit up yesterday and didnt have it connected to internet and it would not let me do anything until I did connect it to internet.  There was no skip option to go past.  I thought I may have been able to setup and tune in channels and use like old vcr where you manually put in recording times and channel.
But I will be lost if I didnt have a tivo now, it really is remarkable

As above, get TIVO if you can find it cheap and you have broadband at home.

Aerials, within reason you get what you pay for. Depending on where you are and how the stars align you may not need a big one, but honestly it's hard to prescribe without knowing the area.

If you can't get TIVO then personally I would opt for an official freeivew box, even though the EPG is average. You get series link that way and probably more future proofing than a non approved unit. (TIVO aside).

Wow... so TiVO is the way to go? The only place I see them listed on 'Trade Me'. There is not mention of them on the 'Noel Leeming' or 'Bond & Bond' webistes.

They have gone end of line I think. Might pay to call a store and see if they have any left. Even at $299, they are still really good value.

If not, this: http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/tv-lcd-led-plasma/media-players/dish-tv/500gb-freeview-digital-satellite-recorder-sku-24181/ is pretty good value.

this dishtv you linked to is satellite only so no good for op who wants uhf (dvb-t) unit

That Dish model is for a sat aerial, TiVo is for terrestrial signal.  2 different things

Maybe you meant this?

I would personally have a good ring around for a TiVo first, even if you have to get one shipped, you wont beat it.

Remember you need UHF aerial, and broadband
