Freeview viewers may need to retune their TV or set-top box when the broadcast frequencies change in the Christchurch region on Tuesday 24 July.

The changes only affect Freeview terrestrial viewers who receive signals from the Sugarloaf transmitter. They will not affect Sky subscribers, analogue TV viewers, TelstraClear cable TV or Freeview satellite TV viewers.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Radio Spectrum Policy and Planning Manager Len Starling said: “Affected viewers will see a message pop up on their TV screens this week, prompting them to retune when the frequencies change. Retuning can be done simply using the remote control.”

“Those who watch Freeview TV and share an aerial with others, such as in an apartment building or retirement village, should contact their property manager for advice on whether their installation requires any modification.”

Managers of apartments, hotels or motels are advised to talk to an installer prior to the frequencies being changed, to see if any technical adjustments are needed.

The channel frequencies are changing to ensure that New Zealand’s radio spectrum is freed up for other uses and emerging technologies.

HOW TO RETUNE

1. Switch on your Freeview TV or set-top box and press 'menu' on the remote control. Select the 'setup' or 'installation' option.

2. Select ‘full retuning’, 'digital auto tuning' or similar (some equipment may require you to select ‘first time installation’, 'factory reset' or 'default settings').

3. Your existing frequencies will be deleted and automatically replaced. This may take a few minutes and your equipment may shut down and restart.

4. Check that you can receive all of your normal Freeview channels.

Helpful advice on retuning is also available on the Ministry website, www.retune.co.nz . Alternatively, people can call the Radio Spectrum Management free helpline on 0508 336 633 if they have any problems retuning their TV or set-top box.

The reminder message in a blue box that obscures a third of the bottom of the screen for at least 10 seconds, gets a bit annoying because of repeated reminders. Is there anyway the viewer can switch the reminder off?

Getting reminded about something that cannot be altered for another week is frustratingFrown, have received reminders via the letterbox as well as the TV screen. The message has displayed on different channels three times in the last 15 minutes.

What annoys me is that I am getting 'reminded' on my TiVo here in Masterton. They reminded me of the Wellington one too. Must be national....

TIVO's can only be messaged nationwide hence the geographic locator for Christchurch.

At least Tivo users are getting reminders, after the Waikato change over and no notices to tivo users, seems Tivo have got the message and keeping their customers in the loop

What a pain in the butt!

woke up to find my tv had no signal as expected so i went to retune my tv everything went well untill i noticed i only have four tv channels! Tv3, Tv4, Tv8(TV3plus1) And Tv9(C4).. is this just a fault with the system being turned off or have i done something wrong?

 

I have a panasonic viera it's not very old got it after the earthquakes since my old one smashed.

This is to be expected. A lot of people may need to adjust their areals and setup to get their systems.
This is usually due to interference (From a VCR etc) or a Misaligned areal.

Mediaworks Mux is on Ch 32 which you are getting. You seem to be missing TVNZ (Ch 34) and Kordia (Ch 36).

What is in your set up? External aerial, splitters, VCR's, Sky box?

RF modulators are a common cause (from these external devices), your aerial at least should be ok as you are getting Mediaworks.

i have one of them oldschool areal's as this tv is in the bedroom i have nothing else plugged into the tv.the channels are clear there is no interference from the areal

As in rabbit's ears? If that is the case, try moving them around as they may need adjustment after the frequency change

aerial thing worked. some channels were found i just have to move my aerial around to finally get a picture

 

but it's saying tv and tv 2 are like channel 803 is this right?
