hey guys,

forgive the extremely noob question, but for years I lived in an area with zero terrestrial reception and so my only knowledge lies with DVB-S....

we just bought a new house and it's got a satellite dish and an aerial like the one below:

is this a UHF aerial? it doesn't look like the ones I know with the mesh grid and the pointy thing, but a couple of houses on the street have the same one as this.

any help would be appreciated!

cheers

If you have a TV with freeview built in, it will be terrestrial/freeview HD.
Plug the aerial in and see what you can tune in...

Sweet -- so why does it differ from the regular UHF aerials with the pointy brush things that poke out from it? Slightly lower powered or something?

I don't have a terrestrial tuner at the moment, didn't want to get one until i knew i had uhf reception, so this is good news.

Hi, the type you seem to be more familiar with is a Yagi, where as the one in your picture is a broadside array (albeit a small one), they both have their subtle differences in characteristics, but by and large do the same job.
