Hey guys!

I've recently got in to a new flat that includes power, water and SKY!

The problem is we don't have a TV. I however, have a desktop with TV-like screens and my partner has a laptop.
Does anyone know of a way we can broadcast the Sky signal from the decoder to a wireless device so we can pick it up with something like MediaPortal?

Maybe I'm dreaming.

I have a TV card that does digital/analogue/S-Video. Is there anyone out there doing a similar thing?

Yes, I can mostly do it with Freeview HD, so satellite it much easier (2GG an hour rather than 6 - 10 GB an hour for HD).

A Hauppage Nova S is a DVB-S based tuner card that will work well in windows (Windows Media Center, Media Portal, NextPVR) and create a file that you can read off a server and play locally.

There are better value cards, eg a Hauppauge HVR3000 or HVR/4000 is a tri mode tuner with an analoge, dvb-s and dvb-t tuner. The analoge is not worth the chip its on, and only the dvb-s or the dvb-t can be used at any one time, but it;s not much dearer than a nova s.

Just a question, are you recording for later viewing? Or streaming in live time over ethernet/wireless from a central media center?

Generally the former....but say in the case of bathurst the other weekend, It was recording all day, and I'd start watching the video at different parts of the day, skipping to the end to be watching the latest.

So it's possible to either watch previously recorded, or live.

Sweet! Are you running the dish straight in to the card in the media center? Or are you running a freeview/sky decoder and pumping the signal in to the card for recording/live streaming?

I believe I'll have a Sky decoder that will be providing the freeview signal as well as the sky. Not sure if I can get that pumped in to the media center somehow straight from the decoder and distribute it via wireless/ethernet to my PC/laptop.

I think OP is referring to something very different than what davidcole is describing, which is using a TV tuner to record freeview to a media centre PC, then watching the recorded file from another device through the network.

I suspect what OP wants to do is broadcast the live signal from the Sky decoder to the network, in a similar fashion that the HDHomerun or Avermedia HD HomeFree Duet. These devices accept an antenna signal (DVB-T), then appear on the network as a TV tuner device that allows users to access and control the TV signal across the network.

I don't believe a similar scenario exists for Sky (at least not one that is easy to implement).

That's what I thought too.
Only way I can think of doing it is feeding the Sky output to the analogue input (composite A/V) on the PC card then find some software that will allow wirless streaming.
Much easier I would think to buy a TV or two? They're getting pretty cheap these days.

I can do that with my Vu+ Duo:

- Watch any Sky or Freeview channel via streaming across the LAN (HD or SD) or via WiFi (SD only)
- At least two different channels can be streamed simultaneously, and probably more if they are on the same transponder as one of the first two

However, it's not cheap to set this up as the Vu+ Duo costs $600+ without hard drive.

as above said cheaper to buy a tv and upgrade to mysky for an extra $15 a month

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Ouch. 600 is a bit steep. If there is not a cheaper alternative, I doubt I will be pursuing this very much in the future!

Excuse me stating the obvious.

If you have a pc screen? LCD? why not just buy a cable to connect it to the Skybox. If its the lack of an actual tv just go down to your local recycler. With the change to digital you can't even give away an old CRT these days.. they will surely have plenty to get rid of.

The OP was wanting a wireless solution, so I am picking that installation of cabling was the issue.
