did i read correctly that satilite freeview wont be around in ten or so years,hopefully i have this wrong

Where did you read that?

If I had the ability to see into the future, I'd guess that your satellite receiver's lifespan would be less than that anyway. My guess is that in 2022 satellite Freeview will be some type of dvbs-2, mpeg 4, maybe HD or that delivery will be handed to Sky (horror), so you will need a new box by then.

It would pay not to stress out over buying a less than $100 box now and using it for maybe 5-10 years. Just enjoy it!

That's prediction is probably based on the expectation that we'll all be receiving our TV and video content via the internet by then. If satellite freeview becomes obsolete, then so will Sky via satellite and so will UHF Freeview.
