I like this move. Obviously some tablets can already get content via the website but it's a move to make it more ubiquitous across all media. Nopefully will gee Sky et al to follow suit.

I use this service quite regularly, more convenient with better options than a PVR in my view.

Will it be available on android though? Current tvnz and tv3 apps only work on apple devices, whch I could never understand considering there being more android devices being sold.

Also I though it would be available on Sony smart tvs considering it is on the playstation already, and quickflix is already on Sony tvs

As I type this my wife is watching an episode of The Mentalist on TVNZ On Demand streaming through the default browser on a Huawei MediaPad (Android, ICS) connected to the TV via HDMI. Be rather handy to have an app to watch it.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Apple iOS has had much greater web traffic though, almost 3 to 1 by some measures. That coupled with it's head start and possibly the more fragmented ecosystem of Android might account for it to date but Android should get support if the move is a serious attempt to get market share in this segment.

Without flash on android, which adobe have now ditched, people can't watch on demand stuff on android until tvnz have an app. Even with flash on android , it is buggy and crashes.

Not sure what the Wikipedia article refers to without trawling it but, the point is, iOS had the head start so got the early money in apps being created etc.

that is share of browsers, which would obviously include mobile phones.

what you need to compare is share of tablets (since who really want sot watch TVNZ on their phone? not me*), The ipad absolutely pwns share of tablet usage.

*well, actually I don't want to watch it on my ipad either. It's only ever the last 1-2 episodes which is pretty pointless give me whole series and I'll watch it, even with ads!

Not with the newer devices that don't come up with Flash built-in...

Yeap, it isn't built into new android devices like the samsung s3 for example. You can however download it from the adobe website, but it isn't supported and can crash.

Thanks for the link. I guess different stats companies have different stats on it. But if you do zoom in on that graph since july, you can see android is trending up, while IOS is trending downwards.

After using a MySky for a few years, and looking ahead, I think The live pause feature is always handy and this could be incorporated in all TVs with a flash card (possible content security issues aside), but as for recording shows I could take or leave that as long as access was available online. Quality is a obviously a bit primitive now but with the fibre rollout etc will improve.

I like the simplicity/efficiency of the download ie low storage requirements at the server and user, with the resource loading on the network to deliver it. PVRS are inefficient old things and, probably due to build cost, well back on component refresh cycles.

Agree with apps for other devices.

Also, is there actually any moves towards an app for on demand? I'm just reading about hopes and desires here rather than any concrete progress.

I would love for TV3 to make an iPad app available, but only if the quality is decent. I often stream from the 3News app to my Apple TV and it's great for convenience but the resolution is a bit too low for a typical modern TV.

I find TV3's web based On Demand service really temperamental but the 3News iPad app works quite well.
