Mother in laws TV has gone in for repair. She was told it would need a Freeview box to get digital TV so it may not be worth repairing. Tisco say it's a digital TV BUT Noel Leemings say it still needs a box.

Isn't a digital TV already Freeview-ready ?

Samsungs Oz site says it has DVB-T which is the method our Freeview HD is transmitted on, but whether your particular unit is compatible with Freeview HD in NZ could be a different story.

Where was it purchased?

Thanks for the link, but I can't tell from that if it needs a box or not. But if just 'being digital' doesn't mean you get Freeview I've learned something !

"Digital TV" is a whole lot of things - not just Freeview HD.

The TV has DVB-T built in, and was sold new in New Zealand by a reputable retailer - should be fine on Freeview. You can't guarantee the EPG will work unless it was sold as Freeview Certified (or perhaps the seller claimed it was capable).

Get Tisco to show it working on Freeview?

The downloadable User Manual at Samsung's NZ site says it has Digital and Analogue Tuners so therefore has Freeview built in and NL is talking BS.
How old is it? if it's out of warranteee repair or replacement should still be free under the Consumer's Guarantee Act. It should last around 10yrs + without problems. If so and it has failed then it should go back to the Retailer who sold it (not TISCO) for them to deal with.

How much weight has that argument really got? It'd be nice, but I'm sure NL will just say tough - should have bought an extended warranty!
Looks like the Motherboard has gone and a new one has to come from Singapore (if available). Tisco quote $388 all up incl Gestapo... + 92 for pickup. Still cheaper than a new one ?

The quote has been accepted, if it doesn't need a box so much the better! Owner in in Wgtn and I'm in Dunedin. She's in her 80s and has a bit of trouble with techy stuff.

Nope. The term "Digital TV" does not exclude things that aren't Freeview.

Digital includes Freeview HD, but also includes Freeview Satellite (which your TV cannot recieve on its own), SKY TV (which your TV cannot receieve on its own), as well as a host of other services, including foreign satellite services that can be recieved here, Quickflix, Netflix, Igloo, etc.

NO. They can't legally say that.
Extended Warrantees are a total waste of money for the purchaser and a cash cow for the Retailer because the goods sold are covered by the CGA. Their other cash cow is their ridiculous mark-ups on cables and power boards they coerce you to buy.
If the item fails within a reasonable time ( around 5 - 10 yrs for TVs) then you may demand a repair or replacement under the CGA as it has proven to be not fit for the purpose. I have done it with a STB from Tricky Dicky and it works. Go back to NL and demand action. If they don't play ball then threaten them with the Small Claims Tribunal. You need to get stroppy with them.
Read the Act online and read what Consumer have to say.

Has your MIL ever tried to get Freeview , or has it been connected to Sky or something similar?

Thanks Brunzy, thats very kind of you. I'll post the outcome here and get on touch when more is known.
She's in an apartment building (Courtenay Place) and isn't sure what the aerial is. No Sky box.

I rang NL after what Bigglz said, they seems to agree Samsung might honour the CGA. but then thought $388 could be just labour charges to fit the motherboard. Hmmmm....

The TV is right at the cusp where it MAY have Freeview. This is an A series (we are currently at the E series) and half of them came out with a 'D' in the part number (analogue AND digital tuner), others, from memory came with another 'A' in the part number (analogue tuner only).

At 4 years of age, arguing the CGA should be fine (as long as it's not clearly misused). However, saying it should last around 10yrs + is not quite right.
Remember, the CGA has to factor in things like purchase price as well as the frequency of use. So, if someone buys a top end TV that is only used 3 days a month for 1 hour at a time... then it should last a long time - and the CGA takes that into account. But if someone buys a bottom of the line set, and they use it 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, well, the CGA will also take that into account.
Oh, and the PS42A410 is the bottom of the line... so, the question is, how much use has it had?

Hi,

NL have offered a replacement TV as parts needed are not available. Not sure what model and I believe it is not Freeview. I would have tried harder for a Freeview model but the deal was done by the time I found out.

Incidentally, how long could one realistically expect the CGA to be honoured on consumer electronics? Say for example you had a LCD monitor and it stopped working- how old would be too old ?

I'd call 3 years reasonable on computers and related equipment. You may be able to push to 5 years for a TV or a LCD monitor.

Yes, my thinking too so I've well and truly missed out. Philips 190B7CB 19" LCD - bought March 2007. Just won't stay on for any length of time, when/if it comes on at all. So the 'tube' (?) could be OK and I'd have a go at changing any of the electronics if I had a spare. No parts anymore - Philips thought it hilarious I 'd even asked ! Nice screen though, still not a mark on it. Shame !
