Hello,

I was just wondering if it is possible to receive Channel 7 Australia in New Zealand? I googled and it seems you need just a satellite, a satellite receiver, and the correct settings. Can anyone tell me specifically what I need? I currently have a LG TV with Freeview built-in plus an unused SKY satellite on the roof (i think its an Optus D1 or something).

Some people receive it via Optus Aurora which is an encrypted service on Optus C1, need a smart card however I believe with VAST being available the service won't be around for much longer (VAST is also encrypted but not on a NZ Beam).

Are you after the V8 Supercars?

Yes, can't stand TV3's so-called "Live" coverage.

The best bet is to pick up the V8 WORLD feed that TV3 uses, its still live but doesn't have any Channel 7 advertising and such.

Its a bit hit and miss, they *usually* do it on Optus D2 but at times it will be on Optus C1 and D1, also sometimes they use 4:2:2 encoding which a number of receivers can't process.

If you keep an eye on this forum link it will help find the feed when it becomes available usually within a hour or so of a race/practice/qual

You can receive Optus Aurora with a standard Sky Dish, and without repositioning the dish.
You need a set top box that can decrypt the signal. There are currently a couple of boxes on TradeMe that do the job - one includes a card, the other has a software program that does the same thing.

The down side is that Optus Aurora will be de-commissioned during the second half of 2013 (the STB's would still be OK for receiving satellite NZ freeview).

The only box that can display 4:2:2 feeds are the Abox. But the V8 races rarely are in 4:2:2. The race feeds also show up on Asiasat 5.

For most of the remainder of this year you can receive Channel 7 and SBS using a standard Sky dish without the need for repositioning it. You need a box capable of decoding the Optus Aurora Irdeto encryption. You can get the kit off TradeMe for less that $100.

So any suggestions as to what other options might be available after the Aurora feed disappears?

Considering SKY have now locked in V8 Supercars for 5 years (and like many, I don't have it as my HTPC does a great job otherwise), I can't see the racing coming back to Freeview any time soon.

I use a terrestrial signal but have a spare standard satellite dish available if it could be used. Being down in Chch I don't know what would be required to get a Ch7 feed here (or any other channel that may screen it).

I'm also wondering if Plus7 (their on demand Internet service) might have it and if so, maybe a VPN setup will get around viewing from NZ. That sounds even simpler.

..the tread goes around that far for a reason!
