After noticing that there was no Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar race scheduled in the TV guide this weekend, I have just telephoned TV3 Media Works and been told that they are not covering the first race of the series and may not even cover any of the others!! Being a keen viewer of the Supercar series, that's a real piss off.

The receptionist at Mediaworks said they will consider showing each race as it comes up but there are no guarantees. Reading between the lines  - that doesn't sound promising at all.

I have also just rung SKY (not that I have it), and have been told they are considering buying the rights to air the series for this year but no decision has been reached yet. With only 3 days to go before the first race, they had better get moving.

Does anyone know if Australian Ch 7 is available via satellite to NZ?? Or is there possibly an Internet streaming option available?

I think the series normally shows on Channel 7 in Australia. I and others will need to look at other options and fairly promptly.

There are a few Facebook groups going re the issue of TV rights in NZ

Sky TV has confirmed they are bidding for the rights (via the Sky Sport Facebook page)

The current rumour is that the races will be shown live on Sky Sport with a highlights package being showed on a FTA channel a week later, the rumour is this will be TV3

Don't rely on what the Sky EPG says right now, if they confirm the rights today/tomorrow then expect the schedule on one of the Sky Sport channels to be changed around quickly.

Been a thorn in the side for not only NZ broadcasting but the aussies too.

They have increased the price to purchase rights this year (a LOT), and put even TEN australia in a tough position as to put money into it or not!

Rumors on the Sat sites that it could well end up being cabletv (fibre feed) feed, and not via the air. But if they still need to cover some areas without it theres a chance it could still end up on C-Band Asiasat5 or IS8, or in 4:2:2 which need a different dish setup along with non certified receiver capable of HD to tap into.

Seeing it on D2 could be a thing of the past :(

So if sky doesn't have airing rights and neither does TV3 - does that mean its fair game to purchase it off an Australian company?

I asked Setanta sports previously about English premier league, and they were not allowed to sell it to NZ as Sky had the rights. But in this case it seems they do not yet.

Problem is:

TVNZ didn't want it back
TV3 made a huge loss on it plus 3news would get in the way and FOUR is "sport free"
Could of gone to Prime but I guess Prime news gets in the way

not really any options left

you may bash Sky but Sky is the only one prepared to pay the money asked for the rights for the big events, if Sky hadnt bought the rights there would be no coverage and its the same for every major sports event

But if they hadn't exercised the rights, then people woul dhave been free to source it (legally) from overseas...

Still goes back to the old addage. He with the gold makes the rules.

Does anyone else remember the days when Sky was that, subscription TV.. IE you paid for the product. Not the ads.. Oh hello. You still pay now, but we give you ads.

They made it cheap(er) added payment options, nabbed everyone who can't really afford it onto it.. it's now become so large that nothing else can now compete.

People are quick to go 'dont goto BP it will make fuel prices drop'. But noone ever blinks at paying for tv that use to be free.

Of course this now begs the question of the feed we'd normally find on Optus D2 (usually), will this continue or be brought in via Fibre
