I have a Samsung BD-E8500 Freeview combo, it seems when I select record from the EPG and the device is not currently on that channel it will not record even though it says it is recording, But if I select the channel and then bring up the guide and select that same channel and push record it will successfully record. Is this a Freeview glitch or my device? It seems crazy that you have to be watching the same channel to be able to record from the EPG

It sounds like a problem with this device. Check for a newer firmware version.

I updated early last week to the latest firmware , I'm not sure if this is when the problem started as I have only had this recorder for about 4 weeks.

I would have but LG did not have the same features, unfortunately this one is loaded with them but doesn't seem to do the basics all that well . Looks like I will have to speak to Samsung support.

LG's lack of recorder would lead you to the obvious BluRay/PVR combo from Panasonic...
The Samsung's have yet to make a decent PVR IMHO.

Unfortunately it could be a little too late for me to return this .

Just had a look at the manual online and it's not easy to follow.
However Pg 52 tells you how it should work. It doesn't specify if you have to be actually viewing the channel you want to record but without seeing what's displayed in the Scheduler that's the way I would interpret it. Strange way to do it.
Only problem I can see is if the clock is set to manual mode then recording may not work correctly.
It seems rather complicated compared to my Panasonic.

Could be worth a try though as it seems to be not fit for your purpose and doesn't seem to do what you want it to. I don't see anything about timer recording in the manual either. It also has an interesting statement "If you set the Country to New Zealand, Guide screen and Functional Specification on this manual may differ". I don't like the sound of that. Not designed for the NZ market?

You don't have to stay viewing the channel but you do have to be on that channel at the time of scheduling it, if you schedule that channel while viewing another it will not work, hope this makes sense .

Yes, thats what I meant and the way I interpret the manual. It appears you have to be viewing the channel you want to record when you schedule it or it won't work. Seems stupid to me.

I have just spoken with Samsung and have been advised to bring it in for repair . Its hard to say what the fault is here as it was recording fine from the EPG at least a week ago

I have a Samsung BR player combo HDD recorder. The model I have is a dog to use.
Like all my other PVR's it has 2 record buttons.
One Red button, usually labelled "Record. This is to instantly (so-to-speak) start recording the channel being viewed. If the machine has a record ahead buffer then it may record from the beginning of the prog, or as much as in the buffer.
To record from the EPG (as is more common) press the Red button in the group of 4 coloured buttons. Usually additionally press the yellow button if you want series record.
These are two separate functions. Maybe RTFM could help.

Hi it does have instant record but does not record what is buffered , also when selecting record from the guide with the red button you are prompted to push the yellow button for series link , but if you do it will not record anything at all . I have read the manual several times but Samsung make very little mention of EPG recording . The device has been in the repair shop just over a week now , I'm just about over it .

My model is a BD-D8500A.
My problem with it is there is no way to extend either the start or end time of the EPG scheduled pprogramme times so you invariably end up losing the end of prog. recordings. So I've never bothered attempting series recordings and only use it for occasional movies which usually have 5min or more of credits which isn't a concern if lost.
While it features twin tuners, it only allows you to record one at a time. Shuttle control during playback is pathetic, making it very hard to spool through com breaks and no elapsed time can be displayed easily either.
I dislike menu navigation on most Samsung products too. They seem convoluted and illogical to me.
e.g. erasing a viewed recording took me ages to work out how to do and is very roundabout.
I regret the purchase which I did rather in haste in a sale situation.
It's a pity as I think their products' technical design and build is pretty good, it's just their software control which is abysmal.
I was also pissed off with their attitude over de-regionalising the DVD operation. They bluntly insisted it was not their policy to enable this feature and would not discuss the topic AT ALL further.

After getting the unit back from service agent who could not fault , I set it back up at home and tested and it worked perfectly. Then I turned on the time shift function which for some reason has to be restarted after the unit is powered on ,and then all the recording functions went back out the window .so obviously this has been causing the fault all along but when it was being tested in the shop the time shift was not turned on . So now I guess its back to the repair shop for another round.
