Hi There

To start with, you are not going to get Aussie TV with "Freeview Bunny Ears"? they are only usable on UHF freeview frequences. Only NZ freeview channels are available in NZ on UHF.
Next, "weird oval arial thingie"? is this a satellite dish? if so you are about 1% on the way to getting Aussie TV. Can I just say that at this point it is not worth going any further. Aussie TV via Satellite is encrypted that means you will need a special satellite decoder. The only channels easily available to NZ are "Southern Cross Ch 7" and 3 x "SBS1" via C1 satellite. These services will be shut down in Dec 2013 (3 months time) when Central Queensland switch off their analog service. The updated satellite service in Aussie is called VAST.  VAST is not designed to be received in NZ.
Sorry.

Doing a manual scan is the same as a blind scan but there's no way you can receive OZ TV even on an outside antenna. Even if you could get a signal they use a different format and channel spacing.
Even via satellite will soon be out of the question.
