Hi,

I'm going to be putting up a UHF aerial for my brother in Wellington. He's in what looks to be the Kelburn suburb.

Which transmitter do you think we should be pointing towards there please?
Looking at the maps, it looks like Mt Kaukau does all of Wellington?

And any idea of what type of aerial is working well in this area?
I was thinking this sort given I'm not sure if he'll have line of site down there.

I'd be looking for Fiztherbert from there ti start with. Of you can have a look at where other aerials are going on streetview near by and plot on google maps or topomaps both kaukau and fitzherbert, that will give you some places ti start. Remember the infill sites are cross polarised to kaukau as well.

Yeah there is a VHF aerial pointing towards Mt Kaukau so presumably that's worked at some stage in the past. As I'm not in Wellington that often I'd like to get it right first time. I will at least try for Fitzherbert but good to get the heads up that the polarity is different, thanks!

Any thoughts on the use of a Phased Array type antenna in this situation?

Looking at one of the similar gain models to say the tri beam yagi type one I linked to initially.

Thinking along the lines of wind resistance now, given the increasingly strong gust ripping through Wellington lately. This may be less prone to movement, and a bit lighter, though I'll need to lock them down regardless.

Anyone used these in similar 'maybe no direct line of sight' type situations/conditions?

Just reporting back.

Went with the Phased Array type, the larger '2 panel' sized option.

Worked well and I'd recommend this for anywhere with strong winds. Obviously you can brace other antenna types but this one inherently doesn't have much sticking too far out, so is ideal for this scenario.

Aimed at the Mt Kaukau transmitter and got full signal on the panasonic TV. House had RG59 cabling, but with a solid core and it seemed to handle it ok. Older house and recabling the lot was more than I had time for that visit.

Windy down there but fine weather. Wellington did good and turned on a great weekend for the family.
