Two new channels appeared on UHF Freeview today. They are Al Jazeera on 16 and Te Reo on 24. I unchecked the latter from my channel list immediately. :)

Refreshing to have a news channel with a new perspective.

Also, I have a little inside information on a new shopping channel starting on 21 soon, but it will be "different" and more entertaining that other shopping channels, so I've been told...

Good to have a high quality News service on free to air. TeReo makes a good companion for Maori TV, good to see.

I've just been told by my informant that the new shopping channel begins Monday 10am. Here is the web site: http://www.yesshop.co.nz/

BaseFM,RadioNZ and Concert have been on Freeview for years and shouldn't be hidden. Your remote has a TV/Radio button to select. I did notice tonight that my Panasonic recorder shows AlJazeera in the Channel list but no picture and sound yet. Works on the PC tuner though.

Parliament TV has been on freeview channel 22 for years. Why would it be hidden from your approved receiver?

Because its not carried to all regions. Nelson for example doesn't have Parliament TV on Freeview Terrestrial.

I had the same thing with my Panasonic TV so did a manual tune and that fixed the problem. My Panasonic recorder had no problem receiving the new channels without being touched.

I am loving the addition of Al Jezeera already; I think it adds a good  amount of depth to Freeviews offering.

After watching Al Jazeera for a while, I love the picture quality! Yes, it is in SD but the bitrate must be very high - much better than any other Freeview SD channel. I guess I got used to seeing Al Jazeera through Stratos!

BassFM, Radio NZ & Concert, YesShop, Parliment TV & TV33(chinese) are gone now but TVSN Shopping Channel(non approved only) has shown up. Al Jazeera & Te Reo remain.

I too did a manual "Channel Add" this morning and it worked OK.

I must admit I was a little surprised to find they put Al Jazeera and Te Reo on the Mediaworks mux. With the gap on the Kordia mux, I was expecting it to show there... but from the still picture, looks like that will be used for yesshop. Oh well - no chance of FOUR going HD now.

I wouldn't say that 2 - 2.5 Mbps is very high, but it is surely better than some of the channels on the Kordia mux.

You get used to low bitrate SD on Freeview. I was used to the low bitrate satellite version of Al Jazeera that was seen on Stratos.
It also helps that Al Jazeera originates in HD.
