I
t is reported that SkyTV has snapped up Fox shows Mediaworks could not afford anymore. This means Bones and Modern Family will be on Prime (no HD) and Homeland, The Americans and American Horror Story on Soho (is that HD?)

It's annoying that shows that were originally broadcast in HD are not not going to be. It seems like a backwards step.

The only consolation (for me anyway) is that I watch none of those shows so I don't really care. But others might. I used to watch Bones but I think it's overstayed its welcome.

Hmm, Soho is a pay channel

I just did a Sky survey on a new channel, BBC Earth, one question was how much, if any, would you pay for it

It sure would be good if Sky upgraded Prime to HD, even if only on the Sky Satellite platform

Shows the problem with lack of competition in the NZ market for content.

I refuse to pay for TV here. The only TV I pay for is Hulu and Netflix which I think is better value.

If something goes to SKy - by defintion - I don't care. Or cease to.

I don't have $1000 / year for TV...the time spent - alone - is more than high enough a price to pay for watching TeeVee.

I watch as little as possible...though there certainly are a handful of shows worth watching at least a few episodes of.

(Aside: I've been watching TV for - literally - 50 years...even the new shows are 'repeats'. I've done my time.)

I refuse to pay sky for anything, due to there being no competition in the NZ paytv and content market, and they still play adverts, even though you pay for it. So once a show goes to sky, or sport, it becomes dead to me. I haven't got into the whole hulu or netflix thing yet, but that is what many NZers are now doing due to the poor TV in NZ.

I pay a fortune now for Sky, so I baulk at paying even more to get the likes of Soho and Rialto. I have particularly enjoyed The Americans and Homeland and am sad to see that they are to become inaccessable without paying extra. The extra I will pay won't be to SkyTV. It will be to JBHiFi for the box set, or from an online source.

I told a slight untruth when I said I don't pay for TV. I actually pay TCL/VF for cable TV service but only the basic service. I would ditch it in a heartbeat if people were prepared to give up Food Channel!

I see there is a much cheaper way to get Food Channel by using Igloo and I was going down that path until I got complaints from my son saying he likes TLC (only available on cable), Discovery and some BBC channel, all of which are  not available on Igloo. So I have to pay some $45 for that privilege.

That's the thing. The more competition, the more providers, and in the case of TV, it is quite likely that you cannot get everything in one place, so you pay more. That was the issue with some users on EPL. Competition created a new option, but some who had Sky and wanted EPL now pay for two, the result of more competition, which causes fragmentation

If you do really enjoy watching TV, but don't want to pay for Sky, or put up with the mindless drivel the free to air channels like to dish up, I'd highly recommend checking out NetFlix (I've no experience with Hulu, but thats probably worth trying too). We made the switch a few months ago, and absolutely love it! I was a little concerned about the WAF, but she wouldn't be without it now.

We do still have Sky, but that is really only so we have PVR capabilities (although I do have a Tivo I can repurpose, with a little bit of antenna rewiring), and so we can opt back into SOHO to watch the new series of Game of Thrones when it airs. I honestly don't think we'd miss it that much if we did give it the flick.

We have Soho so this is good news. Albeit that homeland has just finished and american horror story is not far off, but it will be good for The American's as long as its within 24hours of it playing in the states.

No sign of Sons of Anarchy? (seen the latest season however, that final ep.. wow!). That is sure to annoy many, i thought that got decent ratings here?

I would love to have Prime in HD on DTT but all the bandwidth is taken up by the useless +1 channels!

Why do you pay? We get the Vodafone TV cable service at no additional cost as part of our broadband package. That offer with free install stopped us switching from TCL last year. And Freeview channels keep improving: Sommet Sports was a great addition this year.
