Hey all.

I just wondered if anyone knew anything about 3D broadcasting in New Zealand.
The only reason I ask, is that the folks have a 3D TV, and tonight they flicked it over onto TV One just before 6pm in order to watch the news.
They caught the tail end of Millionaire Hot Seat (the game show) and a message appeared overlaid on the bottom of the screen saying that it was a 3D broadcast and saying the TV could be turned to 3D mode and glasses used.

I was not aware we had any such broadcasts in NZ?

We don't have any here. That's an Aussie show and maybe they have some 3D broadcasts?

I doubt it would be in 3D. Looks like upscaled SD to me. Possibly the source material has a 3D flag that TVNZ are inadvertently passing through, signaling to your TV it's in 3D (when it isn't).

There is no 'flag' triggering this. The TV is looking for side by side 3D and recognises a split screen triggering the '3D detected' message. My Panasonic plasma gives this message occasionally too.

We have a Samsung Smart telly that will show 3D (and which we never use). It will also convert 2D HD broadcasts into 'fake' 3D on the fly and you need to put the 3D glasses on. If you push the 3D button on the remote, it will show a message on screen along the lines of what you saw. Any chance that's what it was?

I am not sure if any broadcasters anywhere in the world are actually transmitting anything in 3D.
The ones that trialled it seem to have dropped it.
There were some broadcasters (ESPN for one) in the states that did for a while - they decided it cost too much and wasnt worth it - I think even people who could watch it didnt bother.
Likewise the BBC pulled the plug on it last year.

Wasn't the last football wc broadcast in 3d? This year it was meant to be 4k but they didn't quite get there and I'm certain this one isn't in 3d.

Yes, I think we could receive 3D TV in New Zealand for about 2 months in 2010 when SBS One HD was showing some World Cup soccer games from South Africa I seem to remember it was only 720p not 1080.
I dont think SBS continued to trial 3D in Australia although they could have done after they removed their two channels from the Optus D1 NANZ beam in 2012.

3D transmissions were terrestrial only.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I doubt it somehow.

3D was a bit of a gimmick dreamed up by TV manufacturers trying to differentiate their products and charge more for TVs with a premium feature. It never really took off. After an initial spike, there wasn't much content ever made for the format or much interest in paying a premium to get it. It never really took off. As things currently stand, it's hard to see consumers paying a premium to get 3D material (which is incompatible with most TVs as well as most of the other equipment in the chain - PVRs, media players etc), or broadcasters investing heavily in supplying 3D material. Particularly given that much broadcast material hasn't even moved to HD yet - and many consumers certainly want that.

There might eventually be some niche broadcasts, but personally I can't see it taking off any time soon.

The only 3D broadcast I've seen in NZ was FashionTV once in a while when it was playing on SkyTV.

3D TV died several years ago - I'd say the chances of new broadcasts anywhere in the world over the next few years are somewhere around 0%

I mean Ultra High Definition UHD TV... I believe is also known as 4k.
The TVs have been sold in JB Hifi and Harvey Norman for some time but can only be used for stored material as nothing is broadcast for this format yet here in NZ.
