Clearly an attempt by TVNZ to dissuade folks from downloading content when if they wait at most for a day, they can see it broadcast locally or on demand.

Well that's well and good but TVNZ has a poor record of broadcasting in HD so I wonder just how many of those shows will be in HD?

And if you watch via on demand you have to watch on a PC, an IOS device or selected Samsung devices and lose the big screen experience and 5.1 audio.

Plus of course ( and I will have to admit I am in a minority here) I can't stand the speedup of audio that occurs because of the 1080i/60 versus 1080i/50 broadcast standards. That should have gone away with HD and it has on BluRay but still persists on broadcast TV.

I think I will still source my shows another way although looking at this list

http://tvnz.co.nz/od-firsts/watch-first-tvnz-ondemand-6078695

Person of Interest is probably the only show I would watch.

They have one show there that I normally watch too.

The quick broadcast is nice but most of their content that I record on my Tivos goes unwatched.

Good to see Arrow, The Walking Dead, The 100, Gotham, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the list, interested to see if Flash is just omitted from the article or if they're not getting that.

Not that I watch it but Flash is mentioned in the Herald article

TVNZ said its spring lineup included the debut of Batman prequel Gotham, on TV2, within days of its September 22 screening in the US, as well as the new season ofMarvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which will star Lucy Lawless, and season three of Arrow, which starts on October 9.

Unfortunately for us they're going to require a username and password to access TVNZ Ondemand.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/10438792/TVNZ-to-require-registration-for-OnDemand-services

Are they going to go pay per view and use your viewing history for targeted advertising?

The PAL speedup problem is caused by content filmed at 24 or 48fps. It shouldn't be a problem for content filmed at 60Hz. Are they still filming television at 24fps?

Most of these new programs are going to be via TVNZs Low Def (LD) on demand.  No thanx.  I'll wait for OTA in HD  or download..

I think the US still captures digitally at 24p so that it looks similar to film. That's easy enough to change to 1080i/60 or 720p/60 for broadcast. But to get 1080i/50 I think they still have to speed it up.

Probably doesn't affect many people but alas it bothers me :-(

I'll just acquire it in HD, because it will hit the scene trackers minutes after airing :-)

I would actually watch it via TVNZ on demand if A: it didn't require registration and B: was in 1080p or 4k.

TVNZ seem to be slowly making progress, but they still don't quite get it.

I can acquire it from free, in high quality HD, in a form that I can store locally and rewatch now or in 10 years. That is their competition. Yet they want users to register, to only provide crappy low def streams, that you can't save, and that they invariable remove form the web after a week or two. Hell even once it airs FTA you can record it in HD with the right recorder.. and save it.. and watch it again.. all we want is that functionality digitally, is it really that much to ask?

Add it was DD 5.1. That means they need to get their app on devices that support DD 5.1 like the PS3 or possibly BD players.

Of course this forum is not representative of the TV audience so maybe what they do will attract a large following?

Looks like TVNZ has virtually dumped all "quality drama" from Britain and Australia.
I can recall only three really good US dramas that I have enjoyed in the last 30 years !  Hill Street Blues , Six Feet Under and The Sopranos .
Thank goodness we still have one video shop in town and now Lightbox aswell !
Hasta la vista TVNZ !

Pity about:
1.  the cruddy quality
2.  the mandatory registration
3.  the ad-saturation, and
4.  the limited device support (accompanied by all that yummy DRM)

Thanks guys, but no thanks.

Now, if they offered a decent line up ad-free and in good quality, with wide device support, then I would be in. I would be prepared to pay for a subscription to get the feed ad-free (if they had enough material), probably a lot more than they would get from selling my eyeballs to marketers.

Putting aside my admittedly minority view about the speedup of the pitch, I would be reasonably happy if they broadcast in HD and DD 5.1.  I have worked out the workflow to record, change framerate and delete ads from those shows so I can enjoy them ad free and in the right pitch. If they are not HD I don't bother and find alternative sources.
