Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is allowed, a mod my remove this post if not.

I need help finishing my Freeview install at my home in Johnsonville, Wellington. I would think its a 20min job for someone who knows what they are doing. The problem I am having is that the guys who installed my fibre connection cut the cable that runs from my Satellite on the roof to under my house and into the lounge. They cut it because there was only enough room in the drilled hole in my floor for the one cable. They done this without asking, and I did not know until after they left. I had paid $110 only 2 months earlier to have it put in. I do not own the right equipment to fix this. What I would like to do is make the whole bigger for 2 cables, Ethernet and the Freeview cable. So would need a drill or something to cut the hole slightly bigger. Also a crimping tool to fix the cable once its pushed back through the hole. The cable is long enough. The house is on stilts so is very easy to access under the house.

Can anybody help? I don't want to have to pay another $110 for the call out, but would be fine giving someone $50 for their time. PM me if interested or reply with any advice.

Quick question, it is a Sky Dish on the roof, once its complete can I get Freeview HD once I buy a decoder? I plan on buying a Freeview recorder. Or can HD only be done over UHF. The box I seen did say Satellite HD but its not very clear on the Freeview website.

I would be calling the ISP to have chorus rectify their mistake rather than seeking someone that you would pay to fix it.

Did you have Chorus up about the cable being cut without your permission?

It was not chorus, transpower sent out a contractor. But no I didn't. I was so exhausted after how much of a nightmare the whole process was I just could not be bothered. Also we had Vodafone TV with the Fibre so did not need the sky cable. But Vodafone TV is so dam useless and Vodafone kept over charging us, so we left.

That box upscales the SD content to HD, but at the end of the day it doesn't tune into HD signal so it is essentially interpolating to fill in the gaps

Edit: From the Harvey Norman website "True picture up-scaling to 1080P HD output via HDMI"

Can anybody comment on the quality of Dish upscaling to 1080p compared to UHF HD? Maybe I will install a UHF aerial instead. Or even a indoor UHF, are they any good for HD?

"True picture up-scaling to 1080P HD output via HDMI", which means the box will attempt to "convert" the SD picture from the satellite to something that may look better on a 1080P screen.

Try reading this wikipedia page if you want a little more detail.

Hi Scott

richms is bang on - as he says, get back onto the ISP who arranged the install. The contractor has deliberately disabled an existing service with no authority to do so and needs to come back to put things right. From your comments about Vodafone TV I'm assuming you have a Vodafone connection? If so, hopefully one of the Vodafone employees who frequent these forums might see this post and be able to help out.

With upscaling to 1080p - at the end of the day, the box is working with a SD signal, so no matter what it does it will not be as good as true HD, as nickb800 is saying. If it were me I'd be looking into having an outdoor UHF aerial installed to get a proper HD picture (on some channels). If where you would want to place an indoor aerial has a direct line of sight with Kaukau you may be alright with one, but my understanding is they can be pretty and miss.

When I tried setting up one of those upscaling boxes for a friend, it was way worse than passing the 576i signal out to the TV and letting it do the upscale. Constant interlacing artifacts on scrolling text that was not present when letting the tv do the scaling, and frequant jumps in motion on panning scenes etc.

The TV will have a much better scaler in it than any satillite box made because the TV is at the same time doing the motion plus interpolation and mpeg deblocking, which are harder to do when a signal has been poorly scaled and deinterlaced as any errors in that cannot be corrected by the scaler in the TV

agree ^

better picture quality if the tv has a better scaler, usually the case with modern tv's.

the fly in this ointment is finding a box that outputs video in its native resolution.

not many do, many llike the dishes have fixed output resolution so select the one that matches your tv's native resolution.

You have the delays when changing res over hdmi which sucks. Also the OSD looks crap when on a sd channel.

The Ultraplus ones will put out native resolution over HDMI as do the newer XDSR / Xscruser receivers.
