Wonder how long been going for, as I think I noticed it another night.

Watching identity theif at moment and when the adds come on the sound is muted, as soon as movie starts back up back to full sound.

Same thing happens on mysky as well as freeview HD.

If change sound to PCM then sound is back to normal on everything, hope it lasts though as nice being able to close my eyes until movie restarts.

They've fixed it now.

Though when adds on they're not faking the DD like TVNZ does so sound only out left and right speakers, which means still get nice volume drop.

I don't normaly watch much live TV, just I hadn't seen that one.

We need to catch up to America few years back that forced TV companies to leave Ad volume as same as program. Some of their political leaders got sick of going deaf through Ads.

Come on J Keys.

Aside from the fact that I'm surprised how many people actually still watch ads, particularly the GZ demographic, I think that having the TV mute itself when ads come on would be fantastic. Pity they "fixed" it.

Identity Thief.

On non dolby programs and adds on TV3 though sound only on two speakers now, where TVNZ it's through all speakers no matter whats on.

Location Christchurch, but it was doing it on Sky where I don't think the HD broadcasts are regionalised.

Television commercials free-to-air are already -24 LFKS without the need for legislation.

-24 LFKS??
What's that in layman's terms? Or maybe I'm just a bit slow this morning.

Essentially, there's an international standard for measuring loudness of television audio as perceived by humans - that being -24 Loudness, K-weighted, relative to Full Scale. All broadcasters in NZ are following this without the need for politicians interfering (could you trust them to get it right?) though sometimes I wonder about Sky, even though they are all part of the agreement.

If a commercial sounds loud, there are reasons for that:
A programme part finishes on a quiet scene followed by a commercial that complies with loudness standards but has an energetic soundtrack
Wide dynamic range within commercial (remember that tv programmes are typically mixed for artistic value and commercials are mixed for full... well... commercial value)
Time of day can affect how loudness is perceived
Your ears are broken
Your tv is broken
Some cheeky broadcaster not following the rules (FWIW, all of TVNZ's commercials are processed to a fixed loudness value. Doesn't matter how they are submitted to TVNZ, they all get automatically processed and nobody intervenes to boost the loudness of an ad.)

What Is Loudness And Why Is It Important? should explain more.

My understanding is that commercials sound louder because they use a highly compressed soundtrack - with a narrow dynamic range at the high end of the legal loudness range. (Pop music uses the same technique.)
Everything is loud.  Loud but legal. Ofter louder than normal programming, which uses less compression.

Usually they are, but sometimes you get an advertiser that wants to be different. So that's just one example of why a commercial may seem loud.

Thanks. I'll ask a guy I know that works there if they had a problem. Like you say, if it happened on Sky as well it must have been all regions of TV3 that were affected.

After all that found out it's my amp.

It was doing again, I turned the volume up real loud and then down and it came right.

When I first turn amp on sometimes no sound out right speaker, I turn it up loud and then down again and sound then comes out speaker, guess my amp is dying.

Can't bring myself to buy a new one yet, but guess it's coming due, weird failure though.

Damn, sounds expensive. On the positive side, a new amp would be nice. My old Yamaha must be getting to that age too. Don't even have HDMI on it.
