Hi all

I am in Christchurch and having bad breaking up and freezing when using the playback on my free view.  It is driving me crazy.

Is anyone else having issues in Christchurch and does anyone have any clues why this is happenning.  I have noticed there are a lot of threads about this, but no one seems to have a definate solution.

Hope you can help.....

I did have a Tivo for many years and when that finally died I had not choice but to go freeview as Tivo is now not available in NZ.

Is this just a FreeView thing?

90% of the time what you're experiencing is due to an issue with your aerial or satellite dish.

Are you using a dish or an aerial? How old is it?
Are you connecting directly to your TV, a recorder, or to a set top box?
When was the TV set top box or recorder last updated?
When was the software on the TV, set top box or recorder last re-tuned?
Does it occur at certain times? For instance, during the rain / wind?
How many TV's / recorders / set top boxes run off the aerial / dish.

The reason I ask...
Typically, most issues are due to a short in your aerial system. Moisture can work its way into the junction box on the aerial itself (where the coax cable joins up with the aerial), this causes corrosion - and typically is leads to issues like you're describing. Cables can also get damaged due to things trapping them, them being moved, pests chewing on them.
I've even seen cases where the customer has bought an aerial splitter / booster system that is so cheap, that when their heatpump or fridge turns on, the signal drops out!
Sometimes, people run too many TV's / recorders / set top boxes off their aerial or dish, and simply don't have enough signal... especially when they're all turned on.

Remember, trees can grow up and in the way of an aerial or dish, birds can nest in them, the wind or quakes can knock them out of alignment...

Hi there.

I use an arial and that is about 3 yr old and it connects directly to the FreeView.
I am not certain as to the update....I looked for that at is seems to be automatic but I wll get out the instructions and check that.
As for the others, I know the TV has been updated, but the issue seems to be the freeview.
I only have the one TV etc.

No trees or anything up there, but it is possible the odd quake may have moved something.  That is most likely.

The freeview box actually froze on me at the same spot on the recording several times and each time I had to unplug the freeview to free it up again.

Make/model of freeview decoder? Could be faulty.
