I'm just posting in case anyone is interested in using a UK TV in NZ.

In the analogue days, a TV from overseas was a boat anchor. These days, if you're going to use a freeview STB, it may worth bringing a TV if you're immigrating and the TV is high-spec anough to be worth it.

This weekend I was setting up an LG TV [can't recall the model#] that had been brought in from the UK. Knowing the UK uses mpeg-2 for freeview I figured it would be fine with an STB, but OTA wouldn't work, but looking up the model online I saw it supported mp4, and the internal menus allowed it to be set up for various EU countries.

I plugged in an antenna & gave the auto-tune a whirl and found that it did indeed pick up all the freeview channels, and even the EPG worked reasonably well.

While I can't be sure how various different brands & models will work, it looks like the old advice of "don't bother" no longer applies.

Off topic I know, but it's great to see another Neal Stephenson fan!

The other day I "sustained a ballistic interlude, that was arrested by means of an ablative technique" (I fell off my bike and got road rash).

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

FreeviewHD in the UK uses MPEG4

Basically DVB-T speced gear "should" work in NZ,

but there is still a big chunk of the world that use "alternative" standards, ( esp, North and South America, China, Japan)

What LG tv model was it?

I have brought an Australian tv back to NZ with me and can't tune any digital channels in. The model is 42LA6620-TD only a few years old.

I understand for NZ DTV it needs to be 8MHz, h264 MPEG4 compatible but I can't seem to find those specs. I have changed the tv country to NZ and set spacing to 8mhz but no luck.

Any suggestions on what to try?

Could also be an antenna problem, is there anyway to check if the antenna is actually connected to the cable in the house, ie a resistance check with multimeter or something?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, glenn

If the TV has NZ as an option when you set it up, it should be able to be tuned here.

Definitely check your antenna (have you another NZ TV or STB you can plug in there to check?)

Unfortunately no STB or other tv to try as just moved here.

Hopefully can find another tv or box to test antenna.

There's no useful way to test an antenna with a multimeter - you need a signal strength meter for that.
Easiest option is you get your hands on a known-working TV - once you've verified a working Antenna, you can worry about the settings on your TV.
